I just started watching 6 feet under, and this may end up being my favorite series ever. Its taken dark comedy to another level. Awesome show.

Great writing, great acting, great directing and cinematography. It's a pretty slow and dark show but definitely worth watching. Looking forward to the second half of the season.
I agree on the cinematography and overall look and feel, but the writing just isn't there in my mind. It's not just dark, it's exclusively so, to the point where everything is just flattened out. There is no complexity to the characters. The most interesting thing about Russ is his backstory and the path he has taken since the case happened, neither of which we get to see or become engaged in. Women are almost non-existant, being outnumbered by about 50-1 if you don't count those portraying prostitutes or strippers. The female victim has no face, just an ass and antlers, and there is no sense of anyone giving a fuck aside from her inmate boyfriend who feels somewhat guilty, and so there is no way for us to become engaged in a narrative about bringing her killer to justice, if that is what it's about.

And not only is it exclusively dark, but in such a bullshit sense as to tie in satanic rituals, and offer accounts of drug cartels that sound as though they were taken straight out of the magazine article that i did find chilling as a non-fictional account rather than squeezed into a narrative in need of some sense of content that can match it's stylistic aplomb. This show, although entirely watchable, is full of empty calories. Fancy ones mind you, like a french pastry, or a beignet i suppose. Intense has been used to describe it, and i just can't see how, outside of a sort of intensity that might be provided by a videogame - which is very much how everything in this show seems to play out for me.

What really concerns me is that it appears to be a part of what is becoming very formulaic with all these cable shows. Dark? Check. Louisiana? Perfect location. Hell, throw in a couple inconsequential cameos of actors from other series. Make it fit within 10 or 12 episodes by adding whatever filler is necessary. And don't really worry about being true to a solid narrative - if there is some of that it's a bonus.

Thriller mentioning Six Feet Under just enhances my sense of all that. There was a series that had its own formula and the story carried everything. It is probably right up at the top of my list as well. And too many other shows are looking like pale imitations of the real thing. Dexter became a pale imitation of itself. I'm just not finding much that is original and truly creative anymore. There's just too much banking on the successes of the past and feeding the impulses of the culture at large rather than effecting them.

Excellent. I think I'm gonna take my time watching this series then instead of blasting through it to where any show I watch afterward will seem terrible in comparison.

It starts to get a little weak through the second-last season, and maybe right up to the last episode. You could probably plow through a lot of those. But i would suggest taking the rest slow for sure.

Just watched 2 episodes of Sherlock...first episode was Hounds of Baskerville and the 2nd involved Moriarty (Sherlock fakes his death ?) Damn this show is impressive
Cumberbatch and Freeman are excellent...and Andrew Scott was equally impressive as Moriarty

I'm hooked...have to research the series and try to get caught up

Lol.... we always seem to get into the same shows. Just finished marathoning this over the last few days. All caught up (end of S2). GREAT show. One of the best character-driven ones I've seen. Ep. 1 of S2.... holy crap! That was unexpected!

the 2nd one you watched was the finale of last series. it picks up from there in the new one.

i really think it's the best show out there.

Just started Breaking Bad. Yeah, I'm late to the party.

Carlos Danger - just skip season 3 of SOA. We're stuck on it and it's been a few months.

i was seriously blown away by it...and ya, it must have been the finale...did some surfing to find it and the episode was called "The Reichenbach Fall"
was intrigued to discover that all 3 seasons only had 3 episodes each...with 1 Christmas mini-episode in 2013

i was a massive Sir Arthur Conan Doyle fan when i was much younger...i remember devouring a ''Complete Works'' in my early 20s
it was so nice to see a modern take on his stories
i will definitely be hunting down everything i haven't seen to get caught up

yeah, the episodes are long, and there are only 3 per series, as you saw. but it makes for much more engaging stories. the writing and acting are superb, and the length of the shows gives them lots of room for depth.

if you are a fan of the franchise, such as it is, have you watched elementary (the american version)? a very different and much more vulnerable sherlock, and a completely different take on the watson, mycroft and moriarty characters. also really good, but a much more episodic-tv-based structure.
