I've seen the whole works and I was disappointed by the end in the lack of a cohesive narrative and characters getting really flattened out with very little development. There's some delving into race that made me really kind of dislike the whole construct of the show at this point. When it started off it was about the class divides breaking down to some extent, and for the better on all sides. Now it seems to be about reinforcing those barriers and the overall rightness of everyone knowing their place.

interesting. I'm only 2 episodes into the season. I always found the bates and Anna storylines too much and it seems like they're really going in that direction yet again.

Yeah that storyline goes into some dumbish territory as well. There was still enough there to keep me watching, but by the end i just felt their was no heart left to the show and so many random and arbitrary bits thrown in from week to week that turn out to just be non-sequitors.

So True Detective is suppose to be HBOs next big thing huh? People saying it's the next Sopranos and The Wire. I watched the first two episodes and it's a real slow pace so far, but many of the great shows start off like that. Amazing acting as always and great artistic visuals though.

Oh and the shows Intro is one of the best I ever heard.

True Detective has been awesome so far, I love crime/mystery shows with content and a great story. Mcconaughy's character is awesome too.

I don't know if anyone else watches this, but a pretty well-done farewell episode for Donald Glover on Community.

As a Community fan, nice to see the show going to its roots a bit.

I kinda thought that it was more about we, as viewers, recognizing the wrongness of that rightness.

Ah - i could see that being the case. I still think it misses the characters that were more than willing to nudge conventions towards modern values, instead of just reacting awkwardly.

i watched the first two episodes of true detective but haven't seen #3 yet. i like this show, though. mm has grown into a hell of an actor. i didn't think he had these kinds of performances in him.

The leads in True Detective are masterful in their portrayals. And the format with the older versions of the characters narrating the plot through interviews is nice. But the plot seems to be one huge dark pit. Or a black hole perhaps. It sucks the life out of everything. I'm becoming less and less interested in these characters, and not really grasping how they are facing the conflict at hand as there is not any underlying motivation for either of them to pursuit the case with any kind of intensity.

The creator of this show did the US version of Forbrydelsen. This seems like another piggybacking on that series, along with a couple of British attempts. But none of them retain the depth of the humanity in the original. This might turn around for me, but the last episode was tedious and trying so hard to match up some substance to go with the style, and the overall dark tone feels fetishistic. I just can't connect in anyway close to how i did with Forbrydelsen. So far it seems to be about the futility of making connections or even attempting to. Maybe there's some deep meaning in it, but it's far too much like my worst masturbatory writings as a teenager, squeezed into a very good narrative form depicted with excellent visual sensibilities.

A little lightness, levity, and likeable human interaction would feel like a cold glass of water in the middle of the sahara right now. And this story seems to shut all that out as an aesthetic principle. If there was something of substance to have made me thirsty in the first place it could maybe work all the same. Instead i find an engaging couple of actors in an engaging narrative form, with nothing more than the initial sense of being engaged able to carry me anywhere.
