this is really frustrating, 4 months of working out and I'm not gaining any weight. I work hard in the gym, my muscles are always sore and it lingers on for days so im sure they are breaking down. It has to do with calorie intake, I am eating more and more but i guess it's still not enough. Are you supposed to force down food even when you feel bloated? I do play a lot of basketball and have a high metabolism, is that counterproductive as it burns too many calories?

Do you keep track of your calories? Sometimes you think you're eating a lot, but might not be.

If you're not gaining weight, then yes you need to consume more calories. And since you're lifting, make sure you're getting good amount of protein also.

A lot of cardio is counterproductive if your main target is to just gain weight.

how's progress been for everyone this winter?

I'm at 153lbs, 11.2 bf%, been working out a good 2 and a half months and I feel good. I just finished my tub of protein powder, used Syntha 6 strawberry flavour last time, really liked it but I'm looking to gain more mass because I noticed I can add on another 10 pounds at least to my frame. Would you guys recommend a mass gainer combined with a relatively healthy diet (no junk food, soft drinks, occasional fast food), and working out twice a day in the summer (once in the morning, once at night), would it be possible to put on 10 pounds of lean mass this summer?

I thought mass gainers were just empty carbs and calories and just made you fat but some people have told me that it helps putting on lean muscle with the right workout system.

IMO working out twice a day is something you dont do if you're tryna gain mass. Unless you eat like an absolute monster.

To gain mass you're better off having short but highly intense workouts and eat like a beast

I dropped nearly 10 pounds because of my new job. Currently trying to find a way to up my calories. I'm at 164 and I still want to get up to 184-186.

Started working out again Jan. 31st.

Went from 265 down to 230 since then.

Was really confused since everyone told me I wouldn't be able to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time...guess they were wrong.

Goal weight is 200 flat. Gonna be a brutal next few months...

some drive really fast in the turning lanes (that's just asking for trouble), disobey road rules, yet expect to be treated like cars. Also I hate when they are driving really slow in the middle of the right lane, it creates traffic. Stupid cyclists..

I've talked about that with a lot people since that discussion where some forum members said it wasn't possible. It doesn't generally apply to "newb gains". That is, if you're somebody who is overweight and never worked out, then there is potential for you to lose fat and gain muscle in a seemingly simultaneous process.

It's once you been working out for a while and don't have a lot of extra fat to use for energy requirements that the general "can't gain muscle on a caloric deficit" ..."can't lose weight without a caloric deficit" rules start to kick in.

Recomping becomes very hard after you've been working out for a long time.

start off with residential streets with little to no cars on it to get used to your road bike. It's very different than a mountain bike. turning, stopping, all of it is very different and takes time to get used to. pre-prepare your routes so you know how many km you want to go/won't run into a major major road.

then go onto long streets cutting through residential streets with semi-amounts of traffic in them. Not yonge street, or bayview, or bloore, but one level down.

THEN go onto the major roads, once you've adjusted to cycling with traffic.

as a general rule of thumb, try to skip rush hour while biking.

if you want to bike with music, don't do so until you're used to your bike, and make sure to have one ear bud out and the volume low enough so some sound gets in through the other ear as well.

make sure to double check before turning, and signal your turns. I recommend learning how to ride with one hand on either hand before moving into step 2 if you don't know how yet.

buy gloves. I had an accident while not wearing gloves and my hands were absolutely torn to shreds.

not essential but: buy the spandex biking shorts; it really helps riding a road bike as their seats are much more uncomfortable than a mountain bike.
