Cutting = eating less, impossible to lose fat any other way, unless your on steroids.
You gotta distinguish between someone who is cutting and someone who is trying to drop like 50lbs. The latter will diet, due to the huge weight loss goal, while the former is really trying to only lose fat and wants optimal fat loss, without losing muscle. That's what I think of when I hear "cutting".

You can run a high caloric deficit while still eating a fair amount. You just eat different foods. That's the point they're trying to get across. It's possible to eat a lot and stay well under 2000 calories a day.

You obviously want to keep eating a fair amount, because you don't wont to lose "good weight", you want to burn fat. If you don't keep eating food, your body's metabolism will think something bad is happening. You don't starve yourself. That's a huge mistake. Keep good nutrients and lots protein coming in so that you limit muscle loss and keep fat burning optimal.

You can definitely lose fat by having a really, really high deficit from just your diet. That's how some obese people drop a shit tonne of weight so quickly. They don't care if they lose some muscle here and there, so long as they also lose their mountain of fat. But it's not optimal if you're already somewhat in shape and want to keep the muscle you have on your frame, as well as keep a proper metabolism.

I pay little attention to nutrition, because growing up I was primarily concerned with strength, but this is what I've always heard from others who were obsessed with their body fat.

Anyway, it's obvious from pzabby's second post that he is eating. He was probably just trying pointing out that he was limiting certain types of food.

P.S.
Sorry for butting into the conversation.

You can eat alot of Low calorie foods, but regardless of how much you eat, in order to burn fat you HAVE to eat below maintenance. The idea behind maintaining muscle is just lifting heavy in order to stimulate your muscles enough in order to maintain as much as possible.

Dieting = cutting. Only difference is dieting is a word used by middle aged fat men and females who dont touch a weight the entire time. A person trying to lose 50 pounds, and a person trying to lose 10, should be doing the exact same thing, only difference is the time it will take

But, see, I think there is some confusion from the beginning, because I don't think INSIDER or CC were advocating eating maintenance level calories. It seemed like they thought pzabby was starving himself, so they were making sure he knew he should still eat.

Sure, you eat below maintenance, but don't starve. That'll fuck your metabolism. It's better to create the caloric defecit through a modest reduction of consumption and low intensity, fat burning exercise, while eating a healthy, yet obviously lower calorie, set of meals.

That's just my bullshit opinion, though. People are going to do WHATEVER THE....... FUCK... THEY WANNA DO!!!!!!!!!

I don't have the right smilie for this one.

Then i guess were kinda on the same page. My problem was with this line by insider. "When you cut, you are still supposed to eat lots, it just has to be clean". I define Eating "lots" as above maintenance/bulking-level. and you should always be eating clean regardless of what your trying to accomplish. and before anyone calls me out on it, cheat meals are fine.

We're at least in the same manual, I think.

Fair enough. I can see how one might interpret his statement that way, if they didn't think pzabby might be undereating.

What I meant by eating lots is eating every 3 hours. Salad, fruits, veggies. Proteins.
Cutting carbs and fats out.

The fat you lose isn't by eating less, but by cardio and exercise.

And it's usually done for more modest goals, by people already sort of in shape (or even great shape). That can be accomplished by still eating a healthy amount of calories, but changing the diet a bit, and getting on the bike a little bit longer each day. It's not that hard to get 500 below maintenace off of low intensity cardio alone. You just need to find the time to do it.

But people trying to lose a lot of weight frequently don't have the time nor the patience for that slow melt, which is why I consider what they're doing different, and would probably call it "dieting" or something else. Some slightly overweight people lose 25-30 lbs in 10 weeks, and some obese people will lose 50+ in 3 months. That does not take into consideration the optimal balance between fat loss and muscle preservation. Those people want to lose as much fat as they can as quickly as possible, even if they lose a bit of muscle. They sometimes consume at a deficit well over 500 calories below their BMR( Just their BMR!). They are already on track to lose more than 1lb a week from their diet, before they even get to their exercise routine.

Sorry there is a lot to read through, so Im sure someone mentioned this.

But losing weight and losing bad weight (or fat) are completely different things.

U dont have to eat at a caloric deficit to get trimmer, thinner and lose fat. You can even gain weight and look thinner. Ive done that recently. You eat clean (even if its a ton of calories) and you train hard. You might gain weight from dense muscle mass, but you will be leaner and trimmer.

If your caloric maintenance level is 2500, and you eat 2600 calories a day. you will not lose fat. Doesnt matter if you only eat chicken breast, sweet potatoes and brocolli. You will gain weight. This is however an extremely good lean bulking idea(some tweaking required).

To you who said you've gotten leaner while eating above maintenance, you either dropped water weight, lean bulked perfectly and started to gain dry mass, or severly miscalculated.

You cant build muscle eating under maintenance
you cant lose fate eating over maintenance
you cant build muscle and lose fat at the same time.

I've heard body "recomping" is possible without steroids, but i'd assume you need god tier genetics and a perfect diet with perfect training.

If you limit your diet to select vegetables and protein, your pancreas will stop secreting insulin, your body will go into ketosis, and you should drop weight without losing muscle and without exercising.
