Hook grip - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
Hook grip in weightlifting defines the method in which an athlete grips the Barbell, which is first gripped with the thumb, then the remaining fingers grip both the thumb and the Barbell. It can be used in multiple weightlifting events (e.g. "snatch" and "clean and jerk").
When I used to lift heavy, my friend and I were at the gym doing deadlifts and complaining that our grips were preventing us from lifting more. This fucking massive dude comes over and explains the magic of the hook grip. Once you get used to it, it serves the same purpose as straps. Hurts like a bitch when you first start, but your thumbs eventually adjust.

I stopped lifting heavy pretty soon after that, but the hook grip is really the only way to make it happen.

Just about able to do 10 reps with 185. I did 8 reps and 2 with a slight spot. The weight keeps on getting lighter and lighter every week. I think next week or the week after I'll hit 10 and then I'll work on 205.

the area between thumb and index finger always gives out first. Excessive computer use?

I tried the hook grip today and the bar was still sliding out of my hands. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

Have been doing fairly light workouts in my condo for sometime now...haven't dared join a gym because of a shoulder injury i suffered a few years back

Was feeling pretty good so i decided to take a chance and join a Snap Fitness that's located right across the street from my place...played it smart and only paid for the summer so i could re-evaluate my condition after the summer (joined June 1st)
Very happy to announce that everything is going pretty smoothly...have brought my weights back up fairly significantly for all exercises and have lost 12 lbs already (the elliptical machines have helped a lot in trimming my weight)

Pretty much back to the same routine i did a few years ago at my old gym (GM Truck Plant) with much lesser weights obviously

Shoulders, Biceps , Triceps, various Abs and 1 hr Elliptical on Day 1
Chest, Back, various Abs and a "Hard" 3-4 mile walk on Day 2 (my old knees won't allow any running these days )
Rest on Day 3

My weight is now sitting at 238...8 more lbs to go
Fingers crossed that my shoulder holds up

Good luck and great work, Shadow!

I've also battled a nagging shoulder injury off and on, so I know that feel. I had severly overdeveloped anterior muscles which eventually led to the joint getting fucked up. Depending on what type of injury you have, it's amazing what the right kind of stretching can do for a joint.

Remember, everybody, it's always important to stretch and work just as hard on your posterior muscle groups.

not quite 6 foot 2
best shape i've ever been in was a very solid 235...but that was many moons ago now
the structure is still there for me...but lack of gym activity over the last 4.5 (?) years has had it's consequences...i've lost a lot of muscle density...like the saying goes...use it or lose it
i don't pretend to think i'll ever get back to what i was 8-10 years ago...just hoping to recall 70-80 percent of that...and being 53 with a bad shoulder, i know it's going to be a slow process
it's just good to be back in a gym though cause it's something i've always enjoyed...have been working out since my late teens with various home gyms in friends basements, Gold's, etc etc...the best gym though was the Oshawa Truck Plant gym (was a member there for approx 17 years up until i retired)...quite possibly the best gym in Canada before the plant was closed...our Union (Health and Safety) approached GM about building a gym for it's employees...they agreed and set aside an area in a building directly across from the paint shop...don't know how many square feet it was but i can tell you it was massive...consisted of a huge gym area, separate elliptical/treadmill/bike area, office area, shower/sauna/hottub area and a full sized basketball court that could be converted into a driving range/badminton court (we also used it for floor hockey leagues)
it had the most updated equipment on the market, big screen tvs everywhere (with satellite feed) and a fucking killer sound system throughout the whole gym

best part was the cost...$100 a year

anyways, i'm rambling...it's good to be back in a gym...my fingers and toes are crossed that i can continue relatively pain free

The move to Calgary has paid dividends concerning my workouts. Found a much more "hardcore" gym (used to be a Gold's) with better Hammer Strength machines and DBs up to 150s.

Did DB rows with the 130s for 6 reps today. Definitely a PR. No straps either.

Tbh, chest has never been a strong point for me...can never seem to generate a lot of power, so i've learned to shape with a variety of exercises
At my peak a few years back i would do 4-5 sets of 8-10 (flat bench) with 220 lbs + bar
When i started back i was doing 3-4 sets of 6-8 reps with a mere 50 lbs + bar...now i'm doing ascending pyramids starting with 120 lbs

So...

120 - 10-12 reps
125 - 8- 9 reps
130 - 5-7 reps
135 - 3-4
140 - 1

I'm trying to add 5 lbs to the initial (1st set) each week...hopefully i can gain some strength/size back using this method
Once i feel comfortable enough, i plan to start doing triangle pyramids...but i feel i'm still a long way away from making that move yet
Slow and steady

My triceps have been twitching for 4 days. Probably not enough rest and potassium deficiency from eating too much Chipotle(way too salty) instead of cooking. Work has been busy but I've been slacking. getting back into it tonight
