Raptors Alternatives...cable, internet, phone

Not as bad as it used to be, but I pay an awful lot for these utilites.
I was hoping people had some alternatives, especially outside of Bell and Rogers for.......

1. Cable TV

2. Internet

3. Phone

4. Cell

Internet- Tekksavvy. I heard a lot of good things about them. I checked out their rates and they are fairly cheap fro unlimited usage. Fairly good download and upload speeds as well. Not sure for the rest of your categories xD

Thx, dude. I just looked at it. The prices seem good. I wonder if the reliability is the catch? I have to have reliable srivec for work. Anybody been on it a while because it says they even have home phone. Honestly, I could probably save $100 a month on all of these services if I can slash them.

Yes, I do tend to need a land line sometimes. Reliablitiy and possibly being able to keep the current home number is an issue.

Hey Ammo, i am in the process of moving and am still undecided with what i'm going to do when it comes to TV. Rogers is a total rip-off. Bell a little moreso. you know what kills me though? How much Rogers charge for a PVR. $500 to own or $25(!!!) to rent monthly. that's crazy.

I got my own dvr, from pioneer. It doubles as a DVD player/recorder. Sony also had one on the market. I'm not sure if either are available anymore, but they were a much better deal than what Rogers offered.

$500 for a PVR is a lot. Over here we have Shaw which was a replacement of Rogers and you can get their top of the line PVR for $350 which comes with 500GB. Or you can buy a PVR ready receiver which is $200 and then buy a $100 expander which gives you 1TB of space to make it a PVR.

Not sure about their satellite systems but Shaw is known for their cable and they only started coming out with their satellite systems a few years ago.

What I dont understand is how these companies get away with offering the same service 3 times, And charge three charges.
INternet/Telephone/TV are the same thing. Most are run through the same wires.

Excluding satellite.

Has there been any lawsuits or complaints ever put to these companies about this.

Yeah the same goes for texting when it is just data, yet they change for it separately.

Acanac Internet sounds good in theory but didn't really work out that well for me. The connection was broken in our first week of usage. My parents thought it was a problem with the phone line, but we fixed it and the connection was still broken. Long story short, it took a week to get Internet connection back and we switched companies.

so i take it you have that in addition to the digital box, right LX?

Also, can you record things with an HD signal?

For those curious Bell has an interesting way around the PVR issue in that you can hookup an external hard drive to their digital boxes via USB and then you have a PVR just like that. It's something i'm still looking into.. Not sure if this is totally true, but the Bell dude said something about how the external hard drive has to have a power source - do they even come with that option (to plug it into the wall)?

This is my biggest fear. In a lot of cases you get what you pay for when it's a big bargain. So far tekksavvy looks good, bt need to hear from people who have used it.

As for things like PVRs, I don't own but I bought a receiver outright used and had no problems.

The big companies may as well be monopolies. They tripple charge because they've got you and they know it.

I have a friend using tekksavvy and unless you are...dont' go there. You're right in that you get what you pay for. If you want the highest reliability and best tech service, you're going to pay for it.

If you dont' want to pay for it, use acanac or teksavvy

Acanac, Tekksavvy, Bell,

Same shit different label. Literally, they all use Bell's infrastructure.

Fancy, don't pay for your PVR, just tell ROgers to give you one free, they will for a year. When they year is up tell them you want to keep it for free or you are going somewhere else.
