Rockets Yao not sure if/when he can return to play again

Quote:
BEIJING, Jun (Reuters) - Yao Ming has cast doubt on his return to the NBA by admitting to the possibility he may not play again as he battles to recover from his latest injury, Chinese media reported.

The towering Houston Rockets center, China's most recognizable athlete, told CCTV he could not predict when, or indeed if, he would fully recover from a serious ankle fracture suffered last November.

"I don't know if I would join some champion team in the future," the China Daily quoted him as saying when asked about leaving a new-look Rockets team.

"I don't even know if I can play again."

Yao, however, said the prospect of playing in front of his baby daughter Amy gave him extra motivation to continue his injury-plagued career in the NBA.

"I wish she could watch me play and even win a championship," the 7ft-6in (2.28-meter) Yao said.

"Not only see through video highlights how her dad played. She is definitely a big motivation for me to continue, although my foot still needs lots of treatment.

"Walking or jogging is okay... but I need to get 80 percent of my strength back to play. I have got only about 30 percent at most now."

Yao confessed he was not sure how he would fit in with the plans of new Rockets coach Kevin McHale.

No point in him playing again, he won't make it 20 games without getting hurt.

i wonder if there will ever be a paradigm shift from the big, dominant, oak-tree centre down low. they can never be relied on to stay healthy for prolonged periods of time. too much weight and body to carry around, especially with the NBA grind. i feel like at some point the ideal centre will have to be a long, athletic, 6'9'-7'0 guy who isn't overly hefty and can actually run up and down the floor without his knees giving from the pressure. at that point height wouldn't be as much of an overwhelming need and there'd be a ripple effect at every position where the average size/height would decrease and the overall talent pool would increase. e.g. PF would be like 6'7'-6'9", PG 5'9-6'1". More closely resembling college measurements.

for yao's sake, i hope he stays retired... its impossible for him to go 100% without being in a world of pain... and its just not worth it, IMO. he'll never be fully healthy anyway.

He beat the crap outta my Blazers in the playoffs, then he was done. Thanx Yao, way to end your career on a high note. Really appreciate it buddy.

Let the Rockets buy him out so he can finish his career in Miami.

It was like this 30 or 40 years ago, I think it's quite impossible to go back there. About Yao even in his last comeback medics allowed him to play only 24 mins. per game no matter what happened, so likely he could not play more than that at best, and the last time we saw what happened

guys genes are messed up. When the human body isn't supposed to resemble that, it's little surprise that you can't abuse it 82 games a year like they do in the NBA.
