Yahoo Sports: Cavs Close to Signing Powe

WOW ... talk about a steal of a deal.

Powe tore his anterior cruciate ligament and cartilage in his knee during Game 2 of the Boston Celtics’ first-round series against the Chicago Bulls. He had reconstructive surgery on May 5 – his third major knee surgery – and has been rehabilitating in Los Angeles. Powe hopes to be back on the court by this season’s All-Star break, and the Cavaliers are willing to take a low-risk gamble on him pending the results of his physical.

The Cavaliers will hold the option for the contract’s second season.

Powe averaged 7.7 points and 4.9 rebounds last season for the Celtics, but became an unrestricted free agent when Boston didn’t make him a qualifying offer.

If Powe returns to health, he could help fill a void on Cleveland’s roster left by the pending departure of Joe Smith(notes). Powe and LeBron James(notes) were once AAU teammates.

You can say that again...I'm still flabbergasted at the numbers on that contract.

Powe will be a very nice pickup though. They've got a nice little bench unit going.

Good pickup by the Cavs. Once Powe is healthy and bacc in the lineup, it should help to solidify the Cavs position as the team to beat in the East

Default Powe to Cleveland?

According to multiple reports and pending Cavs' doctors evaluation of his knee, Powe is about to get a two-year deal from Cleveland.

Too bad - I was really hoping the Raps would figure a way to get him.

Damn, the Cavs are the team to beat next season. Wow, I am impressed with their offseason...Shaq, Jamario AP and Powe...GM of the year vs BC for sure.

Cheers

His knee worries me. I'd take a pass just for that.

D. Smith's blog says that Powe won't be back till mid-season, something like January.

I'm not entirely sold on the guy. He is pretty inconsistent. If he gets to the point where he shows the same solid form every game, he'll be worth a lot more than minimum contracts. But that's a big step in itself.

+1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

People think Turkoglu's contract is bad, imagine how $8.33 million for Varejoa is going to look when he turns 31 and still has two years left on his contract .

Don't get me wrong I love the moves BC has made this offseason but he should have at least try and put in an offer towards Barnes and/or Powe. I remember someone posting that Powe wouldn't accept the league minimum

Exactly, and i'd rather have Turkoglu's contract then Gordons 11Mil/yr (5yr/55Mil) contract as well.

The fact is, imo 10Mil/yr isn't that bad. And neither is the fact that it's a 5yr deal.

Powe had a torn ACL so any team signing him would be taking a risk. The Cavs can afford to take that risk because they still have Varejao, Z, Hickson, Jackson and Shaq as their front court. They can afford to wait for him while he recovers, I think BC made the right choice to go for Rasho.

Powe is a really solid bigman off any teams bench, but he may not even be back next year so it probably wont affect much with CLE. But really, a minimum contract for Powe is a huge steal even if he doesnt come back until 2011. Because when he comes back hes a threat to score 15 points off the bench on any given night, and hes a solid rebounder and defender as well. if he was healthy theres no question BOS would have re signed him over Baby IMO.
