This trade might actually be a step back in the right direction for New York. And, with a fresh start in New Jersey, maybe the old Carmelo could come back.

Yes, I've watched him a lot. You cannot build a team around him, as he doesn't have a great all-around game. He's not a good defensive player. He doesn't distribute the ball very well and his handles are only average. He's a streaky shooter, and his range isn't great. He's better as a 2nd fiddle, like James Worthy was to Magic, Scottie Pippen to Jordan, McHale to Bird, etc. There's nothing wrong with being 2nd fiddle.

It's not surprising that he had his best years when he wasn't the primary ballhandler but instead came around screens for mid-range shots. But in NY where he's asked to facilitate, he's really struggled.

Just my opinion. You're welcome to disagree.

I agree about him not being able to facilitate because on ny he's going 1 on 5, but I have to say he's a number 1 guy.Ny is playing without a true pg so of course it doesn't make it any easier for him. When baron davis returns I'm pretty sure you'll change your mind and melo will rape the league once again

Possibly, and Davis could help him. However, Davis isn't a great facilitator like Billups was; rather Davis is adequate. Davis is also on the downswing.

Anyway, don't get me wrong - I think Anthony is a very, very good talent, but not quite elite (there are only a handful of such players). He's a great scorer, but he's pretty limited in other areas. I think he would be great on a team with someone like Paul, James, or another elite player, where he isn't the focal point on offence (i.e., handling the ball).

This is true. I love Melo, dude is slick the way he scores inside and his midrange is a thing of beauty...but you're spot on here, he's not a number one guy because he doesn't come with an all-around game. He's still one of the clutchest players in the league though:

Melo would be the #1 on 25 NBA teams. To say he's not a number 1 guy or shouldn't is ridiculous

Depends on what "#1 guy" means.

Melo's certainly good enough to be a team's primary scorer. That much is certain. Does that mean that he's a good leader, solid all-around player and franchise player though?

Personally, I don't think so.

Reminds me of the debates back in the VC era. Melo can be a streaky scorer, but a leader? Dont think so.

He's all about me, myself and I.

This. He's the primary scorer, but IMO he cannot win a ring being the best basketball player on his team. He doesn't contribute much outside of scoring.

Melo makes other players look worse
Amare is most obvious example but he's not the only one. look at Landry Fields, the guy has high bbal IQ, he was all energy and hustle on both ends of the floor... watch him play nowadays. I wonder how much value of potential contract could be lost for players that got stuck with someone like Melo on the team?
