Wolves ready to offer Love 4yr/60Mil extension

Quote:

The Timberwolves plan to offer Kevin Love a $60 million, four-year contract extension within the next eight days.

Love, 23, who is playing for $4.6 million this season, can become a restricted free agent after the season unless he signs an extension before Jan. 25. If he opts for free agency, the Wolves would have the right to match any outside offer. Love also can return to Minnesota in 2012-13 for $6.1 million and become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Wolves President David Kahn isn't commenting on contract talks, and Love says he's unaware of the status of negotiations. The Wolves, though, want to get Love signed by next week.

I think he should take the offer. The Wolves are on their way up and I don't think he'll get a better offer than this.

Didn't the new CBA add a new rule that allows home teams to offer more money?

isn't that for max deals? i mean if 4yrs/60mil isn't a max deal, can't someone just offer more money up to a max deal?

RaptorsFan4Life 01-18-2012 02:20 PM

The max is 5 years and 80 million. He is essentially getting max but for 1 less year. I think they will probably match anyone who tries to give him more than that. I can't see them letting him walk.

Dario 01-18-2012 04:35 PM

I'd pay as much as he wanted, Love's probably the best PF in the whole league

LightsOut 01-18-2012 05:36 PM

^ same 15 a year seems kinda low tbh

carp 01-18-2012 06:49 PM

Aldridge at 13M is a huge bargain. He's better than Love.

Dario 01-18-2012 06:51 PM

Aldridge is beasting it in Portland, but its because hes got an awesome team, picture love playing in Portland, he would be averaging 40 points and 40 rebounds

(Aldridge is still a talent no matter what)

SoGood 01-18-2012 07:25 PM

i think max is 5yrs @ 94M - the same deal KD and Rose got from OKC and CHI

Yes and no. The $94 million is the special "Derrick Rose rule" max. It's only available to players who meet the criteria. I think it's for players who either win the MVP award at least once while on a rookie contract, or get named to an All-NBA team at least twice while on a rookie contract. Players who do that are performing at such a high level, that the players' association argued that they should be eligible for extensions in the area of those offered to more senior max players.

I remember being told Kevin Love was no good a few times on this site over the last couple years.

That's a big chunk of change, I'd wait until the T-Wolves are at least playing .500 basketball before signing any max deals.

They won't ever get passed .500 if they don't secure young talent for the future, that's the point. Love doesn't just have the talent, he comes with a good mentality.

Love: 15 and 10 atleast every night if not putting up legendary numbers.

Beasley: 2nd overall pick, still capable of being big in this league, can put up 20 on a consistant basis since leaving Miami

Rubio: Living up to his hype, esp with not starting earlier, I think he is now. Has court vision that only players like Kidd, Nash have. Unique.

Williams: Another 2nd overall pick, who needs to play a bit more IMO.

Johnson: Don't know much about him, but another top 5 pick.

Randolph: People keep saying full of potential, but it might be hard for him to find minutes.

Scary.

Done.

Sources: Kevin Love agrees to deal

The Minnesota Timberwolves and star forward Kevin Love at last have reached terms on a contract extension, according to sources close to the situation, beating Wednesday's midnight ET deadline.

To do so, Minnesota had to grant Love a player option in the final year of a four-year deal worth in excess of $60 million, sources said.

The deal will be signed Wednesday afternoon, after the Timberwolves complete their shootaround in Dallas, a source said. The teams play Wednesday night.

Love said the contract would be signed by tipoff, The Associated Press reported.

"I like the direction the team is headed," Love said. "I like the youth. I like the pieces, like we're knocking at the door and we're close in a lot of games."

A post on Love's verified Twitter page hinted that the deal was all but complete: "To #twolves fans: I'll be in Minnesota for 4 more years! Excited to see you when I get back to Minneapolis."

Sources close to the process told ESPN.com that Love was determined to have the ability to opt out and become an unrestricted free agent after three seasons if he didn't like the direction of the team.

Love is eligible for the same five-year, $80 million extension that the Oklahoma City Thunder awarded guard Russell Westbrook last week.

But the Wolves, sources said, refused all month to budge on their offer and give Love a fifth year, which would have made him Minnesota's "designated player." Based on the NBA's new collective bargaining agreement, every team is allowed to have one "designated player" who receives a five-year maximum extension on his rookie contract.

Because of the team's stance, Love and agent Jeff Schwartz insisted that the final year of a four-year deal would be at the All-Star forward's option. That means Love will have the right to become an unrestricted free agent in summer 2015 if the Timberwolves, who haven't made the playoffs since 2003-04 and are last in the Northwest Division, don't become a consistent winner.

Love did say he wondered if the deal would get done.

"I was willing to make a commitment for five years. They thought otherwise," he told AP. "I'm glad this is out of the way. It was drawn out until 8 a.m., 9 a.m. this morning."

Love played through illness Monday night against Houston and totaled 39 points and 12 rebounds. He's averaging 24.9 points and 13.9 rebounds through 17 games this season after last year becoming the first player since Moses Malone in 1982-83 to average 20 points and 15 rebounds for an entire season.

Too much money.... He'll be traded before his next deal
