Default Wilbon: The foreign flavor to this NBA draft

Quote:
Is it fair to conclude that the 2011 NBA draft was a referendum on college basketball? OK, it might not sound like a big deal that 14 of the 60 players drafted Thursday night were born outside North America. That's only 23 percent, or about the same percentage of foreign-born players in the NBA already. Thing is, four of the first seven players drafted were internationals, including Congolese shot-swatter Bismack Biyombo (by the Kings, who traded his rights to Charlotte), who seems to have been playing organized basketball for about a minute and a half.

And at the end of the night, when teams are looking to get lucky, when they're taking a flyer on a kid who just might turn into something with a lot of work and a little luck, NBA scouts again looked overseas. Five of the last seven players chosen were foreign-born, including kids from Nigeria, the Congo and Sudan. By the time it was over, the Congo had produced two more draft picks than North Carolina, Indiana, Louisville and Georgetown combined.
The NBA draft included a high number of foreign-born players, which could be an indictment of the state of college basketball. - ESPN

Yeah Irving is from Australia. Dad played BB overseas and that is when they had Irving but he moved to the USA at a young age(2) and that is where he played all of his BB.

Irving, who was the No. 1 pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers in yesterday's NBA draft, is a dual Australian-American citizen but chose to represent Team USA at last year's FIBA Americas under-18 championships. He did so after being courted by Boomers coach Brett Brown, who attempted to get him to play for Australia.

In the past week Irving has said he wants to play for Australia at next year's London Olympics despite presently being an American player.

Basketball Australia chief executive Larry Sengstock said Australia would reach out to Irving later in the year to attempt to make him eligible to play for the Boomers, but basketball's governing body, FIBA, is not going to make it easy.

FIBA legal affairs manager Benjamin Cohen said via email from Switzerland that BA would have to request a ''specific decision'' about Irving if it was to force a change in his national team ties. He said BA must request FIBA apply article 3-23 of international rules, which states that a player who has represented a country after his 17th birthday may not play for another nation unless given ''exceptional circumstances'' by FIBA secretary-general Patrick Baumann from Switzerland.
