Why Amare will go to Memphis

Yes... you can strike this on as a 'call' point for me when it happens.

Here's why I think it'll happen: The Suns payroll is at 75 mil and we all know right now, they're desperate for financial relief. To get under the luxury tax this year, which I'm almost sure is priority #1 for Sarver/Kerr right now, they need to cut 5 mil with this deal.

Memphis is only team in the league with capspace they aren't using, with a payroll of 51. LA Clippers are over the cap at about 61 mil but under the 70 tax, but I can't see them getting involved in this with their lineup and assets.

Therefore Memphis is the only team in the Amare hunt that can absorb that 5 mil and get Phoenix under the tax this year. The only alternative would be to get him to a team already over the tax who can swallow that cash, but that would present a 10 million pricetag, which I don't know if anybody takes in this recession. *maybe* New York.

Adding to this, Memphis clearly has to move Rudy Gay. This Mayo/Gay thing isn't working out. The possesions are too dominated by the two, since Gay got injured and Conley's actually touched the ball, he's mini worked out. Amare would create a perfect balance to their team as the PF beside Gasol. He'd also be that star power that could attract some tickets going into next year, where when the recession hits (it didn't this year because season tickets were bought early), the Griz are gonna be fucked up hard.

Anyways... yea. By all this, I think Memphis is the frontrunner. If this deal doesn't go through I don't be surprised if they do another deal where they give away picks and free players just to get under the tax.

And Amare's not going to demand the ball? I wouldn't deal Gay for Amare. No way.

Gay's contract runs out in 2010 too and will probably get an absurb bid, so they're not giving up anything here.

If Memphis doesn't make itself more attractable in the next two years, they won't survive in that city past that time anyways, they're desperate. Again, the recession hasn't hit yet. For most teams, season tickets were bought around last spring and weren't refundable, so the damage wasn't done. The one team who did have a refund policy, the Clippers, got absolutely smashed. Memphis will have a hard time fielding 10,000 a game next year if they go into it like this. By getting Amare they're not only getting a star presence and big man, but they might actually be good too.

Frankly I think Memphis can pull this deal off without giving up Gay, if Phoenix is really that desperate. This is the team that gave away Kurt Thomas and 2 1sts for a 2nd for cap relief. Conley and expirings might get it done. But we'll see.

PHX has really blown it in the last couple of years by giving away their draft picks and not being able to keep Joe Johnson. There had to have been a solution with Johnson to be able to keep him but PHX's management are assholes and the negotiations went to shit.

You keep Joe Johnson and 2/4 of those draft picks you win a title. Instead PHX saved a few dollars and were still compettitive but never could get to that next level because of their management.

Trading Amare is the next step in them becoming one of the bottom feeders in the West again. Then Nash and Shaq will be gone in 2010 and what are you left with? Nothing.

Getting Amare would be great for Memphis but theyre still in a shit market. Too bad too because their core would be fantastic with Conley OJ Amare and Gasol

There's been some word of a three team deal now with Amare going to Miami, Beasely to Memphis, and Gay to Phoenix. This would make a lot of sense for Memphis, they could go into the recession with Mayo, Beasely, and Gasol locked up to long, super cheap rookie contracts and could probably roll out like a 40 mil payroll next year. They wouldn't have to worry about Amare or Gay bolting this way either.

If this is true Phoenix must be the team holding it up and probably scouting for better offers, it seems like a clear win for the other two. Gay and Beasely may have similar value but MB would fit better as a PF fit next to Mayo.

There's a poster on RealGM who works in the Suns office and who's had very reliable scoops on stuff like the Shaq deal... he says Dudley's been called in and is probably gone, and is as a whole the movement and people around (HR, contract guys, etc.), and the tension in the office, it appears something's going down like now

Ok apparantley there's some heavy word about Amare going to Cleveland for like Wally/Hickson/1st. There's a guy on the big Cavs forum who's a legit connection and near agent to Hickson and apparantley stuff's going down, he thinks Amare and Lebron have talked, etc. Then a different source says the deal's been accepted and they're waiting until after the All-Star Game to announce it. There's also a third guy who's a legit news guy on the Cavs forum on RealGM who works in the place, he says Cleveland and Chicago have been bidding, Cleveland offered like Wally/Hickson/2 1sts/Gibson now, then Chicago never offered Tyrus Thomas, and he said the deal's basically been accepted. Yahoo picked up Cleveland being in the race now and all too.

When I made this thread I didn't take into consideration STEVE KERR BEING THE 2ND DUMBEST GM IN THE LEAGUE... AND CHRIS WALLACE BEING 1ST!!!

I'll have to seriously consider rigged conspiracies if this goes through. Seriously.

I guess it fits in with the mold of players who asked out. TMac, Vince, Iverson, etc. Always a piss poor return.

Oh man, Kerr fuck up the whole Phx suns. Trade Marion for a big wall (no offense on shaq) which kill all the flexibilty they have.

Phoenix Suns Where From Western Conference Contender to a play-off team happens.

or

Phoenix Suns Where Kerr Manage to kill a Cap space in just one move Happens.

Yeah the Cavs fans at RealGM are basically saying it's pretty much a done deal from a guy they've gotten info from on like all they're moves (not on RealGM, realcavsforum). Some other guys involved have said they have had multiple sources tell them through the night it's agreed in principle. Apparantley a 3rd team might/is probably involved though.

This also makes sense with my original thought... Cleveland is way over the cap so they can absorb the extra salary Phoenix needs to dump on them to get under the tax. I had mostly discounted a team over the cap dealing for him because New York/Dallas/etc. couldn't fit him, I never envisioned fucking Cleveland could pull this off though... Steve Kerr you tool

I guess Memphis is so cheap that they figured swapping Gay for Beasely wasn't worth paying 5 million... and they didn't want to go near a huge contract like Amare's, especially if they couldn't pony up in 2010

So then Phoenix must have looked to Cleveland as the only option for getting them under the tax this year. AT ANY COST.
