I always find it interesting when Russell doesn't get included into top 10s because he doesn't make a huge impact offensively, but Magic and Bird are shoo-ins despite not making a defensive impact What's the difference? In both cases they're one side players. Actually Russell is arguably way better offensively than Magic and Bird are defensively. Russell is a GOAT level passer for a big man, GOAT level offensive rebounder, and he's still a 15ppg+ guy who had big games scoring wise, he's not Ben Wallace

It should be "how good were they at playing basketball." I realise my "methods" are a bit left-field! But i'm like this with football as well. As long as they had a few amazing seasons, i feel like i've seen enough to pretty much know how good they were. So although pete maravich is nowhere near top10 i bet he's a lot higher in my list than other people's!
I guess T-Mac slips into the top 10 over Kareem then

i don't get this. if anything, russell's legend has become a little too large to the point where his teammates are often forgotten about. it's more interesting that all people talk about is his eleven championships like he won them himself, when he was playing along some of the games greatest players.

players are often forgotten about when making this lists, so omissions are going to happen, especially when you have a bunch of youngster makings these lists as well.

I can't believe I forgot Russell on my list.... *slaps forehead*

Also... to Jackson... I can't leave Stockton off. All-time assists and steals leader and arguably one of the toughest and smartest players ever to play?

10 seasons in a row with 10+ assts/gm
9 seasons in a row with 2+ stls/gm

And a career 51% FG. Pretty good 3pt shooter too (career 38%)

I don't know if there's another PG out there who can match those feats.

not IMO, but i think there's a good comparison to be made there. T-mac was a sick player. In my mind the gap between awesome players like t-mac and all-time greats is not as big as most people have it. We put guys like kareem on a pedestal and their mystique only grows whereas guys like t-mac just get remembered as a "good player."

i'd just like to make clear here, pre-empting any attacks from people who've not understood me. Kareem is amazing, all-time great and better than t-mac!

like i said, i realise my way of seeing things is bit different but i think it's just as valid as judging players who were helped by awesome team-mates, being on the biggest teams, having great coaches etc, etc.

hell, i think you could compare iverson and bryant! Iverson was an idiot at times, sure. But what a scorer. I have to say, although i don't like bryant, personality does come into the debate when discussing players. Bryant has that killer instinct and will to win (also part of his problem,) that made him more efficient and more of a winner than iverson.
