Where Will The NBA Expand?

Summer Forecast: Where will NBA expand?

When it comes to expansion and franchise movement in the NBA, there are two tracks to watch: domestic and international.

First, commissioner David Stern is considering a world plan that would place a five-team division in Europe within a decade. Once the seven-hour leap (non-supersonic transport) across the Atlantic from the Eastern U.S. is made, then the road trip in Europe is not too arduous. Seems feasible.

Then there's the possibility of growth in the Americas. Several cities, which were once home to NBA teams, are now looking for a second chance.

No mention of Vancouver. :(

I don't expect the NBA to go all the way to Europe. That will be way to tough for the NBA players to endure that. If it expands it will be to Canada, more in the US, and maybe Mexico.Or even South America. But not in europe

That's a shame too ... but I guess because its already failed once, they think the chances are pretty good it will fail again. :(

I think with no team in Seattle now, evermore the reason why they should consider Vancouver.

NBA is not gonna expand to Europe. It's not gonna happen even in 2030. There is a strong league in Europe, which is getting bigger and stronger every year and trust me, no team would leave its tradition, it's national championship and the Euroleague to join the NBA. NBA may expand in the Americas or in Asia but the Europe would be the second pole. That's how I see it.

Athens (1 vote)

Pros: Basketball-mad populace in metro area of 4 million or so knows the game. The Olympic Indoor Hall was renovated for the 2004 Olympics and holds 18,800.

Cons: Basketball-mad populace loves their basketball -- local teams Olympiacos and Panathinaikos, with heavily Greek lineups. The cradle of Western Civilization could become a pricey tomb for NBA expansion in Europe.

That's a joke. Only a few Greek players play in our league. Greeks are thirsty of superstars and Americans.:dancing:

If I had to choose 5 cities in Europe to get NBA teams they would be Athens,Madrid,Barcelona,Rome and Paris. And then Berlin, London and Tel-Aviv.

I gurantee you Metro that if the NBA decided to enter into Europe it would be successful for European owners. Greater profits to be had plain and simple for European owners.

That being said my list of potential locations would be: Moscow, London, Paris, Berlin and Rome.

Like Metro said, its not happening, this people dont understand how hardcore are fans about their teams here.
And specially, they dont understand how much europeans hate the USA.

MetroStar 09-19-2008 06:06 AM

It's not a hape for the USA, it is that all sports are organised in a different way. All top basketball teams are clubs, sport clubs which were small when they started and have grown. There are no franchises. All the teams have their tradition, their national league, their rivarlies etc etc. I don't think that a fan of Barcelona would like his team to play all year against the Hornets, the Raptors and the Celtics instead of Real,TAU,Valencia,Malaga and Jovedut. Playing against NBA teams is nice for pre-season games but I don't know if there would by any team to leave its national championship to play in the NBA.

And I think that when they talk about NBA expansion they mean to bring the existing teams to the league (Real Madrid,Panathinaikos,Barcelona,CSKA,Maccabi) not to create to franchises ex. Madrid Desperados, Russian Bears, Rome Ceasars etc.

I dont know how is it in greece, but I know how is it in countrys like spain and france, and the anti-americanism is brutal, fans wont accept that a league most of them hate take over their beloved teams. Its basically what you are saying.

i ahve said it a thousand times, NBA should reduce the number of games they play and a competition a la " champions league" but with less teams should be created, that woulld create a decent revalry.

Most countries hate the U.S, due to their arrogance.

That really makes the most sense on all accounts. Why should teams that are rich in history take a back seat to the glitz and glamour that is the NBA. eff that. Keep things the way they are and then set up a mini tournament to declare a "world" champion.

INSIDER 09-19-2008 09:14 AM

alot of players don't want to play for the raptors because they play in Canada....
so, ummmm, what does Stern think will happen when teams open up in Europe?
it'll be 100 times worse.
i dont see many american athletes wanting to play for a euro team.
this will be a mess... it'll end up being like 2 diffeent leagues; a euro-type side and an american side.
