Where does Allen Iverson rank among the all-time greats?

His jersey was just retired. A number of players have called him one of the greatest to play. So, where does he rank?

Quote:

Kobe Bryant -- who along with the Lakers defeated Iverson and the 76ers in their lone NBA Finals appearance in 2001 -- said competing against A.I. forced him to up his own game. His Instagram post read: "Time has wings my brotha. Your game pushed my then 21 year old self to play beyond my years. Your impact on the game will be felt for generations.
Quote:

"The King" himself congratulated Iverson via Instagram -- and even credited him with inspiring some of James' on-court fashion. He posted the following with a photo: "Pound for pound!! Congrats homie. What a pleasure to complete against u and also become a friend in the process. U the reason why I got tattoos, wore a headband and arm sleeve. Thanks for everything!!

It's incredibly hard to rank him among the greatest. He wasn't the best PG, or SG, or best playmaker or anything, just the toughest little man in the history of the game probably. The best to combine scoring with having a small frame. I dunno... Together with Sprewell he also introduced the cornrows and made them big, heck, the first jersey I owned was a black Iverson jersey.

Well, I think he was one of the most dominate players to play this game. And one the greatest scorers.

people may say he put up allot of shots.. well that's because he can, he had the ability to get his shot off at all times.

All time? Top 25
Guards top 10

Toby 03-04-2014 10:23 AM

those are conservative numbers from me. AI played with a bunch of chodes, made them a good team, even taking them all the way to the finals once.

Too bad AI mixed in the gangstaness with his hustle and play. Too many players think that is part of the game now. I miss the days of MJ class and determination.

He'd be in my top 50

much to the chagrin of my mom, Iverson was my favourite player next to Wince Carter back in the day. I had the classic Reebok Answers, and his was the first non-Raptor jersey I ever purchased. One of the most influential players of all time definitely. I just loved how he played. I'd have to look at a top 50 list to refresh my memory but off the top of my head I would struggle putting him higher than 25.

Really? Why? He was always willing to talk to people. Lead his team in a positive fashion.

Sure he boned every groupie he could find, but his NBA demeanor was always
palatable.

AI's numbers are huge. He is the poster boy for getting 40+ points and his team losing.

Raptor4Life 03-04-2014 12:05 PM

pound for pound one of the greatest of all time. 6 feet, more like 5'11 and 160pounds and did what he did in the NBA....amazing! Height Doesn't measure Heart as Marcus Stroman would say.

Groupies, gambling and forced retirement aside, he was a horrible teammate and people only tolerated him because he won.

And it's continued on into his retirement. The Bobcats are a mess, he charges for promotional appearances to promote the team he owns and his HOF speech was downright embarrassing.

Perhaps if AI had Phil Jackson as a coach and a Scottie Pippen to play beside things would be different.

Also? :)

AI had Eric Snow.

I had to look up what Eric Snow is doing now; Director of Player Development under Larry Brown for Southern Methodist University. And George Lynch is the Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Is this list in order? Russell after shaq, Olajuwon, Duncan?

In his prime AI was one of my favorite players to watch.

Carlos Danger 03-04-2014 08:08 PM

I can't get past his personality.

It's not in any particular order although I would take Shaq, Hakeem, and Duncan over Russell if they were all in their primes today.
