Well discussed among whom? I just don't see how being 12th all time in steals can be neglected when discussing his impact defensively. He was an absolute menace getting into passing lanes and sneaking up on bigs in the post. He was high risk high reward, that doesn't make him less great. He was unlike Kidd and Payton and even Stockton because those guys could be used as stoppers who would play up a position on some of the best two guards. But he was also unlike Nash and other non-defensive point guards in that he would regularly have some positive impact on that end of the court.

Steals result in a turnover and a loss of offensive possession for your opponent.

It's a good defensive play.

I don't know why people so easily dismiss them.

It's a great defensive play but it doesn't necessarily mean you're a great defensive player.

Your lifetime has not been long enough yet then. Zeke was outright one of the best ever at PG and has the rings to back it up, right behind Magic and ...Stockton. Not sure if Stockton or Nash is 2nd. Nash and Stockton are the best passers ever.

Payton... if I had a choice to start a team with the Glove or AI I would take Payton.

AI is not on the same level. He rarely made anyone around him better like these 4 did.

To know how great was AI, think about this, we have Carter at his top level, A Davis as an all star center, Alvin Williams, Curry, Jerom Williams, Mo Pete and Keon Clark, but we could not defeat Sixers.
He was unbelievable.
Catch me if you can.

No one said he was a great defensive player.

But if steals are good defensive plays and he does them at a rate higher then the average player, surely he's not that bad of a defender or it is inaccurate to say he "doesn't have defense".

He got most of steals via cutting off passing lanes while Mckie or Snow pressure their men. He did not have the strength nor the defensive lateral quicks to stay with his man on a consistent basis. So yes, he is not a good defensive player/stopper. 10s on the clock, Nash has the ball..."let's make AI guard him!" said no coach ever.

AI didn't have lateral quickness???????Huh? You honestly think he didn't guard the other point guards down the stretch of games?

Seeing him live, he was just a gnat on defense. His ability to steal the ball took over all of my attention. He might let a guy by him, but would just as likely catch him and disrupt the play at the very least. I hated my team trying to execute against him. He did get burned on his gambles, but a lot of the time guards had to worry about where those gambles might be coming from.

with iversons size and build, he did what worked for him. and excelled at it. he doesn't look like a guy that would be a defensive stopper by looking at him. he was a small guy and slimey

Riddle me this.

AI's individual numbers are great. But what weighs in more as a factor?

PLUS because he is so small ?

MINUS because his teams didn't accomplish much?
