Question What happened to the undersized PF?

Remember when having a wide, undersized banger at the PF position was all the rage?

Carl Landry and Chuck Hayes are playing well, but what about Millsap, Maxiell, Craig Smith, Brandon Bass, Leon Powe (I know he's hurt), etc?

Is it just me or have they all dropped off the face of the earth?

Millsap is behind Boozer, i think that is his biggest problem.

they are still doing thier thing, but the NBA is back to promoting only the stars out of fear of the impending lockout and the recession.

They were making strides for a while there, but they couldn't stay the course, like Pro sports heroin addicts.

Dumb.

Doing their thing?

Did you see Maxiell against Toronto? He was horrible...he used to be the first guy off the bench in Detroit and provided a huge lift. Now, he's an afterthought.

Craig Smith was great in Minny and now he's buried on the Clippers bench.

Millsap's minutes are down and so are his numbers across the board. As Snooch has eluded to though he's found himself playing behind Boozer.

Bass while an integral part of the Mavs bench the last two seasons is an afterthough in Orlando.

And so on and so forth.

well in defence on a few of um, were they ever anything more than they are now?

Decent forwards in a soft crop taking the league by surprise.

Shit gets harder when you aren't under the radar anymore.

Ask Jose about it.

Well, they always killed the Raptors.

Seriously though, I was also noticing a trend of teams going with smaller athletic guys at the 4.

New York plays Jefferies, Orlando/Lewis, Philly/Young, Indie/Granger, the Spurs started Jefferson at PF last night, etc

Millsap still puts up the numbers when given time.

Smith was good on a terrible team.

Maxiell never had the polished offensive game.

Bass is in the wrong system for him. He's not a great shooter and not a perimeter player. Put him in San Antonio and he'd do extremely well.

Powe was a 8th man. Never going to be starter.

Blair and even Jefferson are still showing that when given the minutes you produce. Sometimes there are just better players or HOF's ahead of you.

its a dying breed.
its too bad, because there were a lot of great small PF's over the years... Barkley comes to mind.

remember Corliss Williamson?
although he bombed in Toronto, he was pretty badass.

Theyre still in effect. Its just a matter of their coaches with Maxiell and Bass, Powe has been injured all year, and Smith is actually playing really well for the Clippers this season. He won a game for them vs the Lakers a week ago.

Bass signed on to a 3 pt shooting team that thought a midrange shooting PF off the bench would work but it hasnt so much because SVG doesnt think Bass can remember the plays well enough to play. Maybe thats the case, but hes a damn good player when he does play and he needs to play more. I expect him to play more often in the 2nd half of the year especially when theyre playing the better teams with star PFs like BOS LAL SAS etc

Millsaps not playing as much because Boozer isnt tanking it anymore and is playing really well. Hes still playing well in more limited time though.

Its still a living breed. Theyre better than most backup bigs, but their size makes them backups unfortunately unless theyre playing next to a really good 7 footer.

i'd say its dying.
how many are their in the league in 2010?
only a handful.

these guys are getting more versitile and athletic now... the big powerful (yet shorter) undersized PF is becoming extinct.

soon, the undersized SG will be vanishing.... just wait and see.

The undersized SG has turned into the have to be PG because theres too many 6'6 starting SGS thatll destroy em, see Curry, Stephen and Ellis, Monta.

Young isnt an undersized 4, hes 6'9. The guys in this convo are 6'6-6'8 if not shorter. Young is an athletic 'hybrid' forward.

It's tough when so much emphasis is on the perimeter.

And I never liked Powe. He was very up and down. Probably at his best when the perimeter game is more in play though, so he might end up doing ok. Mobility has become more important than banging, or as important. That's where a guy like Landry excels.

I'd say 6'9" is the cut off for PF's.

i was thinking more of guys like Ben Gordon and OJ Mayo...
guys stuck in the 6'2 - 6'4 frame, and dont have the ball handling skills to play PG.

Barbosa, Barea, Delonte and Wade worked out fine, but still it depends on the player and system, I find that undersized SGs work harder to score, get fouled more and are a pain to defend, rather than the 6'6 counterpart.

they're strictly offensive though... 9 times outta 10 are defensive liabilities.
