Westbrook out up to two months after knee surgery

Well, there goes my fantasy team. Just traded John Wall too.

Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook underwent his third surgery of the calendar year on Friday, an arthroscopic procedure that will leave him out until after the All-Star break two months from now. The blow comes on the heels of Westbrook’s meniscus tear from the first round of the playoffs last April, and the subsequent clean up surgery he underwent in October. Westbrook returned surprisingly early to the Thunder just three games into the season, and after some initial struggles the explosive guard began to play excellent, All-NBA level ball for Oklahoma City.

As it stands now, though, the team will be without their star until well after the season’s mid-point. From a press release the team sent out on Friday:

Russell has been playing pain free, but recently had experienced increased swelling. After consultation and consideration by his surgeon in Los Angeles, a plan was established to monitor the swelling that included a series of scheduled MRIs,” said Presti. “On the most recent MRI it was determined by the surgeon that there was an area of concern that had not previously existed, nor was detectable in the previous procedures, and it was necessary to evaluate Russell further. The consulting physician determined that arthroscopic surgery was necessary to address the swelling that was taking place. We know that Russell’s work ethic and commitment will help him return to the level of play that we have all come to appreciate.”

Westbrook is expected to return post All-Star break.

Scarily, meniscus tears are oftentimes more frightening than ACL tears, in spite of the relatively short recovery time. While an ACL tear may keep a player out for up to a year, and a meniscus tear results in half as long to return from, a compromised repaired meniscus can often lead to perpetual swelling and knee pain, sometimes resulting a career-altering microfracture surgery. While an ACL tear can often result in a cut and dry return to action after an extended period of time, meniscus tears can lead to operation after operation as the player in question experiences continuing discomfort – as we’ve seen with Westbrook’s two post-tear surgeries.

Westbrook Undergoes Successful Arthroscopic Knee Surgery - out till after ASG

Quote:
OKLAHOMA CITY, December 27, 2013 – Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right knee earlier today, Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti announced.

“Russell has been playing pain free, but recently had experienced increased swelling.

On a side note, what could OKC give us for Lowry? :mu:

Probably nothing, they have a great emergency plan in Reggie Jackson. If Westbrook was out for the year, it might be different.

We'll see if they have trouble winning. IMO that team isn't that good without one of Westbrrok/Durant out of the lineup.

Their bench scoring is now quite crappy if Jackson is starting. I could see them pushing for that rumored "veteran wing scorer" trade. Afflalo, DeRozan.

Really wonder if he will ever get 100% healthy again. I know his injuries just started up, but if they keep up at this rate it could be bad news for him.

Westbrook is tough, he'll be back for the playoffs. In the meantime...

throw some All-Star votes for Lillard out there. He might be able to sneak in as an alternate.

Fan votes won't matter for backups and injury selections, but he should make it anyway.

damn, I just dropped Reggie Jackson for Ilyasova yesterday in a 10 man league. Was hoping Ilyasova finally got over his ankle issues. Before Jackson clears waivers in 2 days, someone will use their waiver on him for sure
