i was watching harrison barnes at the 4 position and watching him excel throughout the series and the question came up on whether rudy gay is really a small forward, or does he belong to this new wave of small ball 4 players (tobias harris, barnes, leonard, etc.)

doesn anyone see this or is rudy just a confusing player to utilize?

Don't forget Lebron/Battier & Melo. They're the ones leading the small ball 4 revolution.

Gay might be playing a 4 just out of default by having to guard these other SFs now playing up a position. And he did so during the year along with Alan Anderson. Both played minutes at the 4.

oh yeah totally, but the reason why i didnt include those three in my example is that they're so skilled and have the experience to play those positions at a high standard. especially lebron and carmelo who can play those positions because of their prowess.

however i was asking (sorry, my original question seemed vague) if rudy gay would look better as a 4 rather than a tradition 3 that instead of spreading the floor we change his role to play down low like crashing the boards, help defense through swiping or behind the back blocks on slower big men, post-up jumpers and second chance points sorta forward. something like a rich mans gerald wallace, jeff green or a quicker, athletic and more skilled brandon bass. Instead of hoping him to transform into the isolation clutch time performer like Lebron or carmelo.
