Mavericks Vince Carter doesn't really like dunking anymore

Quote:
“Back in the day, I didn’t really care,” said Dallas’s Vince Carter, in the visitors’ locker room after a game at Minnesota. “I’m suffering now.”
He’s talking about the price of a youth lived at the rim, recorded in highlight reel after highlight reel: his self-alley-oop off the glass at the 2005 N.B.A. All-Star Game; the 360 reverse windmill with which he opened the 2000 Slam Dunk Contest; the time he went toe-to-toe with Alonzo Mourning, rising above one of the N.B.A.’s best rim protectors to slam it home. And, of course, his legendary leap over 7-2 Frederic Weis in the 2000 Summer Olympics. It was dubbed the “dunk of death” by the French media. [...]
Asked if dunking is as much fun as it looks, he grimaces. “Nowadays? I do it because I can, but sometimes, the landings suck. That takes the toll on your body. If it’s needed, it’s needed. But if I can make the two points by layup, I’m going to do that. You have to be smart about it.”
Smart isn’t always lauded in athletics, but Carter has learned the game lasts much longer than a dunk. “When you’re younger,” he said, “you don’t really care how you land when you come down.”

He was dunking every single game so many times each game.... the dude was flying in all over the place. I hope Ross is listening, we don't need our high flyer to have his high flying days cut short!

The dunk of death was just a killer dunk. Vince was on top of the basketball world. Don't hate, appreciate... and if you're Ross, duplicate!

MJ was dunking more than Vince, Kobe did quite a bit of dunking, Lebron dunks all the time.. Didn't affect their careers all that much

vince had jumpers knee, standers knee and sitters knee. after being shot numerous times while out on the court, i'm surprised he still plays this dangerous game of basketball.

Vince has some pretty terrible knees so it may have taken a toll on him. Gotta do whatever it takes to keep yourself in top notch and healthy

Really miss those VC days

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say;

1. You must have been young and not watched VC play when he was young, he dunked everything and played way above the rim.

2. Likely you have never dunked much, or played consistently when you could. Jumping sports are absolutely deadly. I have calcium on both knee's and two steel hips to show for all those dunks when I was 23. If I could go back and do it again, I don't think I would dunk a whole lot.

a touch over 6'1"

Jumping came easy to me because I trained hard for it, but man, is it ever a killer.

I believe you could dunk, but 41" inch vert? At 6'1, as long as your arms were normal - not necessarily long but just not short - you'd only need a vert of about 31-33" to dunk. At 41" inches you would be getting up high enough to do massive throw downs. Let's see those pics!
