Default Vancouver wants a second chance

Quote:
Rumors are starting to spread that Francesco Aquilini, owner of the NHLís Vancouver Canucks, is reportedly expressing interest in purchasing the Indiana Pacers and moving the team to Vancouver, B.C.

Pacers co-owner Herb Simon is working as hard as he can to work out a new arena deal with the Indianapolis Capital Improvement Board and says he doesnít want to see Indy without an NBA team.

This wouldn't be the first time that Aquilini has looked into buying an NBA franchise. In the past, he had looked into having the New Orleans Hornets relocate to Western Canada. Just how serious those talks were remains unclear.

In many ways, Aquilini's pursuit of an NBA team makes perfect sense. In addition to owning the Canucks, Francesco Aquilini and his brothers also owns General Motors Place, the stadium where the Canucks play thier home games and served as the home of the Vancouver Grizzlies during their six-year stint in the NBA. Like any good landlord, Aquilini is interested in getting new tenants, and an NBA team would occupy the stadium at least 41 nights of the year.

It also makes sense that the NBA would be interested in partnering with Aquilini. During his time owning the Canucks, Aquilini has been an engaged owner who has been not been afraid to spend money. He also owns the stadium his team plays in, which would likely prevent future squabbles with local government like the one that's taking place in Indiana.

GM Place also remains one of the few stadiums in North America that is ready to host an NBA. Since the Grizzlies left in 2001, the stadium has undergone renovations, including the addition of new luxury suites. The stadium will undergo further renovations in preparation for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Fixed.

I would love Vancouver to get another shot, but I just don't see it happening.

It might.

But the USA don't like us, Aquilini will have to sewriously plan it out, Like Balsaille, in order to win.

At least the NBA seems a little more willing to relocate than the NHL does.

I don't think that Aqilini is soo serious about this. He definitely is not as passionate and dedicated as Balsille is and if he were to become that serious then it might be closer. We need Aquilini to own the Raptors instead of these cheap craps that own the raps now.

You're funny. Who 10 years ago would think that a man from Kitchener, Ontario would help create a device that no businessman in the world could do without? Yeah, I would never, in a million years say what Mr. Balsillie is able or not able to do. I think he saw the bankruptcy loophole and is taking advantage of it. I'd honeslty be surprised if he doesn't get it and Bettman getting the heave ho.

As for this, I don't see Indiana leaving or the NBA letting them leave. Indiana is basketball country. The US population is naturally migrating West. Has been since its inception. Plus, I'd argue Seattle if they get a new arena built would get a new team ahead of Vancouver. But, I'd say that one of New Orleans, the Clippers, Sacramento and Atlanta would all likely move and I'd say that markets like Norfolk, St. Louis, Seattle, Las Vegas would all be ahead of Vancouver.
