Edited the title Ugo .... they signed him to an offer sheet. Not an outright signing.

Hawks have 7 days to match it.

Interesting. Kind of redundant with Rudy Gay there already but they'll definately be athletic.

True, my bad, article says that aswell ;)

I do like Smith's game, im not sure this is the right place for him tho, among some Vets and an experienced coach would have been nicer. Poor Atlanta, pretty high offer to match, losing Childress, right when they are getting good, 2 of the 3 key young pieces leave or are trying to leave. Horford is such a gem aswell, wish we could get him :P

They'll probably use Smith at the 4 the same way the Jazz used Kirilenko at the 4 in years past. This is actually a solid move by the Grizz. Gay, Conley, Mayo, JSmith. That's a very talented and young core.

Kirby 08-08-2008 12:10 PM

Kirinlenko is 6''10 and a good defender. Smith of only 6''8 I believe..

Apollo 08-08-2008 12:15 PM

AK is 6'10"

The Hawks are gonna match this offer anyway. what other real option to they have other than to become a lotto team again?

INSIDER 08-08-2008 12:17 PM

i like the move by Memphis because they are looking to run small ball and have a very solid group of youngsters... very potent. plus Gay is going to be a star next season (mark my words).
on the flip side, i think Smith will have his work cut out for him... he's too small for PF, and the defensive mismatches will be tough.
his rebs will suffer, as will his blocks.... and most impostantly, his health.
he's athletic and can run, so it may work... but its risky. he lacks size to really compete against guys who will be 3 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier.

Adequate Swag 08-08-2008 01:09 PM

Atlanta will likely match this.

If not, Memphis will be a lot of fun.

Smith is a little undersized at the 4 in the West, but he was able to handle it in the East, so it's really not that much of a stretch for him.

The Grizz won't win a lot of games this year even with him, but my goodness would they ever be athletic.

If Marc Gasol panned out, the Grizzlies would be building some team

Conley, Jr.
Mayo
Gay
Smith
Gasol

Bench: Lowry, Darko

Right up there with the Blazers IMO.

Other reason this would be a great move is because the franchise is on life support, getting Smith and having an uptempo team would surely help attendance

Gasol/Darko
Smith/Warrick
Gay/Walker?
Mayo/Jaric
Conley/Mayo/Lowry

They still have Crittenton too, no?

Kirby 08-08-2008 01:48 PM

I actually hesitated to include Lowry because on the Rosters it said that it was the final year for Crittenton and Lowry so I thought they're expired. But yeah I'm thinking they go Crittenton too.

See how silly that is? 1 inch. Smith is 6'8".
1 inch.

And Smith is a decent defender. His totals have gone up every year he's been in the league.

The MVP of West Hollywood 08-08-2008 03:34 PM

He's one of the league's best help defenders... average man to man, but yeah, that still makes him at least decent.

If the Hawks dotn match this they should just fold their franchise in ATL because this deal is MORE than reasonable, I dunno how they pulled this off with Deng getting like 15 mil more like 3 days ago.

Memphis' starting lineup would be INSANE

souternmost raptors fan 08-08-2008 11:06 PM

If this goes through for the Grizz, then they deserve some serious props. Everyone thought that they were saving up, but then they go and do something like this? Man if this goes through, in a few years when their young core develops to their potential, they will be able to do some serious damage. This, if it goes through, is a great move in every way imaginable.

As far as this signing goes for the Hawks, this is a really sad offseason. They had two up-and-coming young talents, and could very well end up losing them both. I only hope the best for the poor, poor Hawks.

Offer matched by the Hawks:

Quote:

ATLANTA (AP)—Josh Smith will remain with the Hawks after Atlanta quickly matched an offer sheet from the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday.

“Tonight, the Hawks organization received an offer sheet from the Memphis Grizzlies for Josh Smith,” Atlanta general manager Rick Sund said in a statement. “We are happy to announce that we will match their offer sheet.

“Ownership, management and the team are happy to have Josh return as a member of the Hawks.”

Terms were not immediately disclosed.

The Grizzlies announced earlier in the day that Smith, a restricted free agent, had signed the offer sheet. The Hawks had seven days to match the offer.

The Hawks drafted the 6-foot-9, 235-pound Smith out of high school in the first round in 2004.

Smith averaged 17.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in helping the Hawks make the playoffs last season.

it's already reported that the hawks are matching it.

the owners should have an unwritten rule on signing offer sheets. now the hawks are completely screwed for any sign and trade scenario that they were working on. rock and a hard place. can't let him walk for nothing.....
