Union Wins Arbitration, Giving Avantage To Knicks, Clippers, Blazers

Quote:
A source informed of the decision tells the New York Times that the players union has won a "complete victory" from the arbitrator in an appeal of the NBA's interpretation of a disputed collective bargaining agreement rule.

The union sought to ensure that teams that acquired players via the waiver claim process would retain the same Bird rights as when those players are acquired via trade. The NBA argued that a player's Bird rights should be re-set at the time of the waiver claim.

The ruling most strongly impacts the summer planning of the Knicks, who now will not have to use their mid-level exception to retain Jeremy Lin or Steve Novak. Lin can be signed as an Early Bird free agent. To sign Novak, however, the Knicks will only have a Non-Bird exception.

Also helped by the ruling are Chauncey Billups and J.J. Hickson, whose full Bird Rights will remain with the Clippers and Trail Blazers, respectively.

The NBA announced later that it will appeal the arbitrator's ruling.

Hmmmm... Nash would probably be ideal in NYK.... Lin couldn't have a better teacher and neither guy would be forced to play huge minutes.

Amare would love it... that's for sure.
