Uh Oh Portland - Miles Returns To Memphis

Link-Portland is screwed
Quote:
Less than 24 hours after Portland warned rival teams not to sign Darius Miles to a contract or risk possible legal action, Miles is heading back to the NBA.

According to report on Yahoo! Sports, Miles has agreed to a 10 day contract with the Memphis Grizzlies. If Miles plays in two games, Portland is back on the hook for his salary for both this year and next, meaning they'll be above the luxury tax for this season and they may not be able to sign a max free agent next.

The Grizzlies waived Miles on Tuesday to avoid having his contract become guaranteed.
The Grizzlies are snaking the Blazers pretty bad here
Wonder if we could get some of the Blazer's un-resignable players

they'd better play him or they're going to have to fight collusion accusations.

portland makes so much money if darius doesn't play. it goes beyond affecting their ability to be a free agency player. multimillions worth of luxury tax would have to be paid, hundreds of thousands of league disbursements would be forfeited, and i would assume their insurance company would halt payments (and probably sue them, given their actions). its not unthinkable to see portland having a team sign and sit him at their behest.

I don't think so:

Yahoo! Sports reported Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert sent a disapproving response to Portland. Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver did the same, according to ESPN.com. Also reacting was the NBA players’ association, which vowed to challenge “collusion” or any action geared toward preventing Miles from working.

Earlier Friday, the NBA sent a memo that announced teams were free to sign Miles to a Uniform Player Contract and that any such contract would be approved by the NBA.

does anyone know if Miles was going to be paid regardless of this signing? Was this actual money Portland was worrying about or just cap money?

I wouldn't want D_Miles to be out $18 mil and have to get a job at a gas station.

Cap money.

"If Miles appears in two more games this season, the $18 million remaining on his salary will count against the Blazers’ salary cap. The development would make the Blazers a luxury-tax payer and limit their future free-agent spending.

Portland is still expected to be under the cap this summer. If the Blazers let Raef LaFrentz’s $12.7 million contract expire and Miles’ contract goes back on their books, they would be approximately $7.5 million under the current cap.

The figure would be $16.5 million if Miles never played."

miles is still getting paid nine million a season. for that reason, i seriously don't know why someone would be feeling sorry for him.

again

he's already proven that he's not over his injury - let him sit until the end of the season and try to make it back next year.

whatever screw the owners, right? fuck that, screw the insurance company.

note to memphis: bad business will always bite you in the ass.

Sarcasm my friend...and I was just wondering what Miles might have to say with lawsuits preventing his return...or a paycheque.

DM will always be my starting forward for the Coolidge Basketball team lead by Van Wilder.
