Timberwolves targeting Gay this summer

Good luck to them.

Quote:
Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay will be a restricted free-agent next month and the Timberwolves are one team that is expected to target him.

Gay is among the second tier of free agents this summer, behind superstars like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

Minnesota owner Glen Taylor and president David Kahn have already targeted Gay as an attainable player, according to Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

Memphis owner Michael Heisley continues to insist that Gay will be a member of the Grizzlies next season. The team has the right to match any offer Gay gets because of his restricted status.

Melo is going to resign so NYK doesn't need a lot of cap space for next year, so I could see Gay being signed

It doesn't matter anyway. Memphis will match whatever anyone offers anyway, especially considering that the max he can get is what, 14-15Mil/yr?

RealGM had on their front page the headline "Timberwolves dream of Gay/Love"

The title has since been changed.

Memphis would be foolish not to match for Rudy.
The price will be a little higher than he is worth but if the expect to retain Gasol they must do it.
They have the makings of a good team.
Without him Gasol gone and likely Randolph won't resign.
It sucks being a team in poor financial health.

A few quick points to clear things up.

1 - If Rudy gets a max contract, his starting salary is $13.1 million. If he signs a contract through Memphis, he can get raises of 10% for 6 years, but if he signs elsewhere he only gets raises of 8% for 5 years. Eithery way, it's a lot of money. In his final year of his contract, he'll be making at least $17 million, and more if Memphis gives him the max.

2 - Heisley claims that he'll resign Rudy or match offers. However, he might just be saying that to protect his asset. I mean, Memphis has been losing money. Given that situation, paying Rudy an average of > $15 mill over 5 years could be a poor allocation of funds. It's possible that Heisley is just threatening to match so that he can work out a sign and trade. And I'm sure that Rudy's agent would like a sign and trade too, since Rudy could get a 6th season on his deal.

3 - Chronology is important. Jeff, you need to remember that Lebron might hold a few teams hostage. If a team extends an offer to Rudy, Memphis will have time to match. It's a commitment of time and money. So, a team that wants Rudy is probably going to be negotiating with Rudy and Memphis right off the bat. I would guess that New York will be going after 4 or 5 other fish right off the bat and won't be capable of guaranteeing Rudy and his agent that they can offer him the max until mid to late July when they know what other players have decided. Teams like New jersey and Minnesota might come after Rudy on July 1st while the other teams are pursuing the higher profile agents.

I'm inclined to agree with Windex that Rudy will likely prefer to go to New jersey over Minnesota. However, Heisley does hold some power, since he can match New Jersey's offer. That ability to match might enable Minnesota to nab him via negotiations with Heisley and Rudy's agent. If Minnesota appeases Rudy by offering him 6 years and $99.5 million (Max Bird rights contract) and appeases Heisley by offering him a nice pacakge for agreeing to a S & T, then maybe the T-Wolves get Rudy. Having said that, New jersey is just as likely to do the same thing. The Nets could offer Heisley the 3rd pick + a prospect in exchange for signing Rudy and shipping him to New Jersey.

Rudy' situation is really interesting. Nobody knows if Heisley is bluffing or telling the truth. Heisley might even match a non-birds right offer, then keep Rudy for part of the first season (he earns $13 million) and trade him at the deadline when some other teams get desperate. Who knows? It's intriguing.

The Star Tribune says Minny will target free agent forward Rudy Gay this summer: “David Kahn says he plans to call two agents at 11 o’clock Wednesday, when the NBA’s free-agency negotiation period begins. I hear from a good league source that one of those two guys is Memphis forward Rudy Gay. I texted David Kahn for a confirmation or denial Monday evening and he did not respond. For months, Gay has seemed like one of the most realistic possibilities if the Wolves did something significant in free agency because he’s young (23), could grow into the kind of star you can build a team around and is a restricted free agent for a Memphis team that might not be willing to match a rich offer. Last week, the Wolves drafted Wesley Johnson, who plays the same small-forward position as Gay. That pick might suggest that the Wolves won’t be in the market now for another small forward, but remember: This team drafted four point guards (and traded away two) last summer and also added swingmen Martell Webster and Lazar Hayward along with Johnson on draft night.”
