Default Is Tim Duncan underappreciated?

I was listening to the FAN today when driving home and well I had to stomach hearing Barb speaking about basketball and as if she really knew what she was talking about. And they brought up the discussion of the MVP and quickly snuck in a comment about how Tim Duncan has "lost" a touch if you will. And I got the impression that in their Kobe/LeBron love fest and seeing who is the better player, hell of all time, Duncan somehow got neglected.

Now, if I were to think of some of the best players to ever play the PF position, Duncan always comes to mind, but seemingly for others (and alot of "expert mags out there) he's always surpassed by either Karl Malone or in one unmentionable magazine Amare.

So it got me wondering, how appreciated is Tim Duncan by today's fan? Or has he done his job THAT efficiently that we somehow forget how big of an impact he had on his team? Should Duncan be mentioned as one of the all time greats or no? When you look at his career numbers and consider that he is one of the ONLY teams to actually beat the Lakers dynasty I find it incredibly difficult not to see him in that category. But that's me, I'm curious what others think of the man known as "the big fundamental".

Tim Duncan IMO is the best poward forward to ever play the game. He's a good defender and has a wonderful inside out game. Oh yeah and he wins.

Apparently he's not flashy enough though. *sigh*

I think being a fundamentally sound player has actually hurt him to the younger genration. I think it's quite sad.

Its because he's fundamentally sound and doesn't have to be cocky on the court to prove he's a player. Rarely makes stupid decisions and because he demands as much attention as he does in his post game, the better his peers look because of all the double teams he attracts. If only Bosh could demand the same type of respect in the post.

Bosh has been compared to David Robinson, so maybe our Duncan just hasn't come along yet.

I hate the Spurs but I dont hate him. Hes an all around good guy and plays the game the way it should be played. And yeah, hes probably the best PF ever, though I think if my boy KG traded places with him theyd probably be talked about a lot differently.

Solution: Dont listen to the FAN. Bunch of puckheads.

Duncan=Most respectable star in the league. I wish there was more Duncans and less lebrons.

Hands down an all time great. But Karl Malone WAS a PF. Duncan is a center, lets be honest. he just came along at the right time and played alongside Robinson. he will always be referred to as a PF, but he truly was a C. I guess I would hold them both in equal regard as the best PF's to play the game.

Its kind of hard for our generation, and really unfair that we didn't get to see some of the old timers play in their primes. PF's like Bob Pettit, who defined the power forward position, McHale, and Barkley(who I only got to see in the twilight of his career) are all guys you could make a strong case for as well in the PF discussion.

in closing, to answer your question Claudius, duncan is definitely the most under appreciated player of our generation

I grew up watching Barkley, McHale, Malone, Oakley, Rodman et al.

Duncan IMO is better than all of them.

Here's a good article on the subject.
