Red face For those with dreams of another Vancouver team

Quote:
ORLANDO, FLA.—Looks like another NBA team in Vancouver is a dead issue.

Commissioner David Stern ruled out any North American expansion during his annual state of the league address at the all-star game here and made it sound as if there is little chance of a team even relocating to the city the league forsook just over a decade ago.

Stern said a move to keep the Kings in Sacramento has hurdles to go but remains a strong possibility and there should be some closure on a new ownership group to keep the league-owned Hornets in New Orleans in the next week to 10 days.

If those two things occur — Sacramento would be the least likely of the two — Vancouver would be dead for the foreseeable future.

“I just don’t see a North American addition,” said Stern. “We’re at 30, and we’ve got teams that we are working hard to keep in their cities, to make strong through revenue sharing in our system, to grow their value, their fan base and the like.”

The Kings face a March 1 deadline to put financing in place on an arena that’s seen as essential to keeping Sacramento in the league. Stern met Saturday, and will meet again Sunday, with Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, a former NBA player, and remained optimistic a deal could be reached.

The other immediate possibility might be the league-owned Hornets but Stern said a deal to keep them in New Orleans looks imminent once the league and the state of Louisiana work out an agreement.

He'll want strength, certainty and stability before he rides off into the sunset and Silver takes over as commish.

stern is right no expansion, but why not move a current team back to vancouver, i guess the current teams are to successful to move to vancouver who already has nba arena ready

markets like charlotte, milaukee, minnesota, new orleans, sactown, memphis, cleveland

all these markets are much more important than what vancouver can offer,

Stern wants money. If There's someone who can make a big offer, we could see a franchise back in Vancouver though the don't have a good appeal.

Meh, expansion in general is a dead issue. And regarding relocation... everybody's got a price.

I don't think anyone ever thought of expansion. The talent pool is too depleted as it is.

It's about entering into strong markets that would be financially viable (unlike about the 10-12 that exist right now). Off the top of my head I could see Charlotte, Memphis, Milwaukee, Atlanta, Indianapolis and New Orleans all at risk of losing their teams.

So yeah, expansion, no, but once Seattle gets a team, if there's a strong ownership group, Vancouver would get one (heck, maybe even the Grizzlies).

Chicago: 2.69mil
Toronto: 2.61mil
Philadelphia: 1.52mil
San Antonio: 1.32mil
San Diego: 1.22mil
San Fransico & Oakland (Bay Area): 1.1mil

It's not always about the size of the market. Sometimes the location of the destination plays a big part. With these two cities being big tourist attractions.

Miami: 400k
Orlando: 238k

Metro Vancouver is 2.2mil which includes:

Vancouver
North Vancouver
Burnaby
New Westminister
Richmond
Surrey
Langley
Delta
Coquitlam
Port Coquitlam

All cities are within 5-45 minutes away from each other so I guess you can say the population is about 2mil+

But if you want to put it that way you can add mississauga and brampton to Toronto which boosts the overall population to like 3.8mil
