Sixers are hoping to clear CAP space for Brand, looks like they may be able to get him after all :reporter:

Minnesota sends Philadelphia its $2.8 million trade exception from a 2007 deal of Mark Blount to the Miami Heat.

Carney and Booth have been told of the deal, sources said. The deal can’t be finalized until the NBA trade moratorium is lifted on Wednesday.

Sixers general manager Ed Stefanski has methodically cleared room over several months to make his franchise a major player to lure Brand or Smith. Now, the NBA’s July free agency period has been delivered a deeper drama. Stefanski’s intentions are clear: Get into the bidding with the Clippers and Warriors for Brand or make an offer to the Hawks restricted free agent, Smith, that will be too steep for Atlanta ownership to match.

Getting Carney and Booth off the cap gives the Sixers the chance to offer a starting salary of approximately $14 million a season. The Sixers won’t know the precise figure until the league announces next season’s salary cap on Tuesday.

Lol Minnesota and Memphis are like 3rd world countries. Send all your trash there!

Horrible trade for Philly. Its not a sure thing anyway to get Brand, so giving away a 1st rd pick and a decent player is just dumb. Unless they have some sort of verbal understanding with Brand its a horrible trade.

Aren't they going after Josh Smith? I'm pretty sure they're clearing space to make a massive offer for Josh Smith.

Today its been all Brand stories on Phillys front.

Philly is making some good choices and everyone in the East better watch out unless they don't sign Brand or Josh Smith - then it's a little dumb. I think they may have made the mistake of trading their 1st rounder. Minnisota is the team to watch - Love and Big Al Jefferson he is a beast. The KG trade worked out for Minnisota.

Actually they're going for both J. Smith and Brand. But Brand is their first choice over the two.

You have a point there. But if they do this trade they'll have a lot of cap space and defintely enough for Brand. I don't believe the have spoken verbally with Brand or his agent yet. Philly is taking a big risk here. Because if they go through with this trade and Brand doesn't come to Philly then they are in trouble.

I see Brand re-signing in LA. It's a nice situation. Josh Smith is a nice piece but if they offer him max money then they're kinda insane.

But why they give up on Rodney Carney so quickly I dunno and the first round pick is huge. They better get someone otherwise they have really screwed themselves unless they have a trade worked out.

I hope the 76ers don't get Smith or Brand.

I don't think I can't argue with that too much. If Philly gets either of them they are going to be pretty strong this year, ironically, they are also in OUR division. That would really suck for us. But i think we'll be okay. The bad news is I think they are getting Brand.

My thoughts on this move were summed up (and partly formed lol) pretty nicely by Dwyer over at Ball Don't Lie if you care to check out his post.

Basically, if they throw the max (or near) at Smith, theyre kind of heading in opposite directions. That's a very young team with an old point guard who is a massively tradeable asset right now as his deal expires next summer. Why hang on to Miller if they're reloading with young guys? It's still difficult to see them getting out of the first round with their roster plus Smith. Sure they'll be real fun to watch, and Miller is a good point guard, but once he leaves next off season (assuming he won't take a huge pay cut) they're left with Sammy, Iggy and Smith eating up a huge portion of their cap room and they've got guys like Thaddeus Young and Lou Williams who are going to need re-signing.

It seems like they're handcuffing themselves over the next two offseasons (which are, as we all know, huge FA classes) to get a shot at Josh Smith. They could have moved Miller to clear even more space for the Smith signing, chalked this season up as a building year in which they would still battle for a playoff spot, and then have further cap room to work with over the next two summers. They won't want to trade Miller at the deadline this season unless the team is out of it, and all indication is that with Smith they'd be a middle of the pack team.

That doesn't change the fact that I will still watch the hell out of this team if Josh Smith is a part of it though.

Major 07-08-2008 07:06 PM
