Totally agree, I just don't think there is anything wrong with pointing out that he is of Chinese decent either.

I'm sure he is proud of it.

the conversation about race kicked off becasue of accusations of racism. from there, the point was just being made that this was silly.

Whenever I watch a game with someone that doesn't watch basketball, they'll almost always express surprise at how many white guys are on the court. Making this guy's race a point of interest lies in the same sort of nooby ridiculousness as that.

Sorry LX... but you've got your head in the sand if you're going to tell me that race (and racial stereotypes) plays no role at all in pro sports. It most certainly does... even in today's "liberated" times.

People are amazed and inspired when they watch Lin because they see something that they haven't seen before (or only seen very rarely). Didn't we see some of the same hype when Jason "White Chocolate" Williams came into the league? Or even when Nash first went to PHX and starting killing it?

You can't possibly tell me that seeing a PG of asian descent start and play well didn't raise your eyebrows in the slightest.... For the most part it's an anomaly when it comes to the world of NBA basketball, the same way that euros were 25 years ago before guys like Shrempf, Divac and Petrovic came over.

Yeah, my cousin who doesn't watch basketball said once that there wasn't many white players in the NBA. Kind of funny since she's a semi hockey fan, a sport that's 99% white. Lol

what annoys me is when I hear people talk about how shitty the Raptors are because they only draft shitty euros every single year, and almost everyone on the team is white -____-

From what I've seen of Lin, his bball IQ is through the roof, far superior than most white players in the league.

Oh I know it plays a role. I think my post points that out. It doesn't play a role for me. I've watched enough of the game to have gotten long past given it the slightest thought. And I thought most of us would be past it as well.

Of course there will always be easier connections made with players that might look like us, in the less sophisticated parts of our brains. And the NBA tries hard to make it easier for a white majority audience to think of the players in terms of the sorts of black figures that cross over into white culture, not in ways that make people think any particular player could be some white dude's "black friend", but rather in ways that could make the average white guy think he might have a chance at being accepted as the player's friend.

I've been dying to cheer for an Asian that can play ball. Soured when the Knicks got him off waivers.

yea.
Its because he breaks all stereotypes for a typical asian-american. A lot of asian people look up to him and feel proud because a single asian person is able to breakthrough in this day and age of mass media. Gives everyone hope and makes asian people proud of their heritage.

I've got a plethora of white friends that have not stopped talking about Blake Griffin being so freakishly athletic for a white basketball dude.... he's not just your average ginger.
