The story of Sam Bowie

Some of you younger guys might not even be aware of this story, but oddly enough, Portland had the "Durant or Oden?" debate about 25 years earlier with another promising big and another star guard.

Sam Bowie and Michael Jordan.

POR ended up using their #2 pick on Bowie and CHI took MJ @ #3... and the rest is history.

Here's the complete story though. It's a good read.

Yeah, Portland's fucked up a few times. I bet they wish they could have the 2005 draft back too. They traded back from #3 to #6 and selected Martell Webster instead of Chris Paul or D-Will. Not as bad as passing on Durant or Jordan, but having Chris Paul would have really helped their franchise.

It doesnt matter, anyone who goes to portland will be plagued by injury. I'm predicting Lillard injures himself in a way similar to Rose and Shump (i.e. ACL Tear).

Eat your heart out Toby :cookie:

No need to feel bad for Blazers fans. They have never truly suffered like Raps fans have, apart from a couple of Jail Blazers years.

That's brutal. I have no clue how DWill and CP3 weren't top three picks. Did interviews not count for anything back then? Because CP3 has always had a bball (and academic) IQ off the charts. Also he's a born leader. DWill is just a big point-guard for his size who has great playmaking; I guess he could have been looked over as not the best shooter?

People had concerns about Dwill being able to control his weight. He actually worked REALLY hard in the summer of his draft and came into camp in great shape... and to his credit he's stayed that way.

CP3 dropping was just stupid. He was being compared to Isiah Thomas even when he was in college. ATL made a MASSIVE mistake passing on him for a guy (Marvin Williams) who wasn't even good enough to START for his team at the time. Just a huge blunder.

Yeah, Marvin Williams was a huge blunder, they could have started with a core of Josh Smith and Chris Paul (and Deng/Iguodala/Jefferson if you redo the Childress pick in JSmooves year).

Looking at situations like these you see how fickle NBA success is. It really is about getting lucky not once, but two or three (maybe even four) times in the draft and come out with all-star/slightly sub all-star players.

This is why the TWolves are going to go nowhere. They whiffed on two top 5 picks in the last three years (#4 Wesley Johnson and then #2 Derrick Williams). If they instead had Cousins or Monroe, or I don't know... Paul George instead of Johnson they would be considerably farther than they are now, and that's not even seeing how that would affect their 2011 pick. They could have very possibly have George/Valanciunas instead of two guys who are already busts. Rubio/George/Kirilenko/Love/Valanciunas seems like it would be a damn good line-up for the next 3-4 years. (Even though Pek is farther ahead of JV right now)

Well to the Timberwolves' credit Derrick Williams was considered a lock at #2. There was also rumblings of him even stealing Irving's top spot. He isn't considered a bust yet either. The guy just doesn't play because with the exception of Rubio(who they have to play), Adelman favours older, more veteran players. Hell I'd take him on the Raps over 1/4 of our guys atleast. The last game he started(in replace for Kevin Love) he had 23 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks. The next game he didn't even PLAY.

I had to watch all this Bowie crap growing up. Then had to watch it all over again with Oden. At least Kevin Durant doesn't have 6 championships yet.

Toby 12-21-2012 12:54 PM

Paul Allen's done with bad picks and horrible contracts. He's dropping the axe on everyone over here.
He's pullin' a Vince McMahon. YOU'RE FIRED!!!

INSIDER 12-21-2012 12:56 PM

the fact that they lost out on Turkoglu at the very last second makes everything even.

Those 'Jail Blazer' (extremely corny) teams were really strong man, they made the playoffs regularly.

I wouldn't say "really strong", since there was zero chemistry to be found on those teams. But you're right, it was rather the cleanup in the two years after that where they posted consecutive 20something win seasons.

Still when you have only 2 seasons of extreme sucking compared to decades of constant playoff participation, how could you complain really??
