Arrow Steve Rifkind is starting the ABL

Quote:
Steve Rifkind is starting an American-based basketball league called the American Basketball League.

Rifkind is the founder and chairman of Loud Records, as well as the CEO of SRC Records. Rifkind has worked with many hip hop musicians and also has worked on many marketing campaigns.

An inaugural 24-game, 12-team season will begin in January of 2013.

It will challenge the NBA's D-League by paying as much as $3,000 per month and serve as an overseas player feeder.

The league will be based in Miami, San Antonio, San Marcos, Sugarland, College Station, Ft Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Fort Walton Beach, Sebring and Corpus Christi.

The league will use FIBA rules.

looks like the whole league is in 2 states. probably going to be a Florida and Texas division.

There are a lot of basketball leagues in the country already (probably 10 or more). don't think its a smart idea. only difference I see is that they are using FIBA rules. maybe this will attract poorer central/south American players??? because $3k/month isn't a lot

Basketballers are underpaid in general, compared to terrible footballers world wide who are crappy, but get paid like basketballers elite

3K a month isn't too bad. It's well above minimum wage.

It might not be as bad as some of you think because it's more convenient than going over seas for crappy players. If anything it's definitely going give the new Canadian league some trouble.

I'd lose my condo on 3k per month. True though, it's certainly better than min wage.

pfff, getting 3k a month would be a dream come true for me atm. saying that it's not enough is just ridiculous. scrubs playing ball for three thousand bucks looks like gold for me. remember, this is a sport. only real talent is worth the money (by money i mean millions or a bit less).

Canadian league isn't as flexible - this league looks like its only 2-3 months long (24 games) so players can make 6-9 grand and play somewhere else for 9 months.

NBL is 1/2 year and the good players make probably 15 grand, maybe a few 20.

The thing about both leagues is that the players are paying little to nothing for food and accommodation. Total compensation is higher. They wouldn't be getting benefits though.

In the end - I doubt this Mickey Mouse league competes with the NBL. One owner vs Eight. 1/4 year vs 1/2 year.

The kicker;

NBL playoffs - Best of 5 Series > ABL's weekend Final Four

I'm sure your right but I'm also sure that some players will prefer to play sin the states for notoriety and because it's closer to home. For players in league food, housing and transportation are all paid for, so 3k a month goes directly to there pockets, meaning it isn't that bad. But I didn't know that it's only three months, if that's true, that's a big upside to playing in Canada.
