Default Stern wants players salaries slashed

Quote:
NBA commissioner David Stern said Thursday there was no quantifiable progress in collective bargaining talks over the summer, and the league revealed it is seeking a reduction in player salary costs by about one-third.

Stern said the league wants player costs to drop $750 million to $800 million. Deputy commissioner Adam Silver said the NBA spends about $2.1 billion annually in player salaries and benefits.

"We would like to get profitable, have a return on investment," Stern said. "There's a swing of somewhere in the neighborhood of $750 to $800 million that we would like to change. That's our story and we're sticking with it."

Stern and Silver spoke after completing two days of meetings with league owners, who are seeking major changes to the current CBA that expires June 30. Silver said the league has told the union that owners are in a "diseconomic situation," with projected league-wide losses of about $340 million to $350 million this season.
This is gonna be an ugly fight.

I can't see how a lockout can be avoided! Too much needs to be addressed.

That's been rumoured for awhile actually. If a lockout seems imminent many of them would pull out.

in the NHL draft right before the lockout I believe Washington got to keep their pick, so at least we'll have the pick
top players will want to come out and get a #1 picks contract before their stock can drop or get injured. the whole season wont be canceled, so they'll get payed

It's a conspiracy!

Miami traded their picks back to us this year when it won't matter! The entire NBA is against us.

I would like to see players slashed, but I would also like to see ticket prices go down
theyre just going to cut salaries and keep tickets the same or raise them

Something has to be done about players getting 20,000,000 salaries and then bailing on the team... like Marbury and Eddie Curry and his 13 million contract.

Need some better incentive program or stricter rules/goals.

Turk signed a big contract and he gained weight and has no incentive to improve anymore.

they always manage to get hte Raptors in some way, in a year where to top rated prospects might decide to hone there skills one more year instead of a lockout could be brutal

first time they got us, we won the lottery but because of rules they forced us to draft Camby over Iverson

even recently we could have had Durant, Oden wanted to play in college and always said he was going to play but Durant was a straight to the nba guy, when they changed the age limit rule when we won that lottery that year and draft Andrea Bargnani
