Default Stat-Heads - Read This!

Here is a very interesting article for those of you who rely so much on the importance of statistics when evaluating the game and it's players.

The Confessions Of An NBA Scorekeeper - Nick Van Exel - Deadspin

Great read. However, the Atlanta Hawks are the kings of screwing up the score sheet....including missing baskets.

I guess its a good think that Lenovo is in charge of compiling stats for the NBA and not team scorekeepers.

Great read. I only hope the need for people to see individual accomplishments that mean nothing in the big picture gets overcome by a love of the team game.

The comparisons to Enron are striking. If the fans reward the love of the boxscore over the love of the game, then they are going to get beautiful boxscores and shitty games.

Baseball is a perfect game for stats. It's a game of geometry and of immediate cause and effect that can be told in the language of numbers. Basketball is far more musical, and like improvised music when it's at it's best, at least for me. It can be an micro-managed numbers fest played by robots, but why would you want to see a symphony played by puppets?

Yeah, a very interesting read. Certainly, all the things that the article talked about make sense (padding stats for media coverage, emotions getting in the way of doing the job, etc.). I wonder how accurate stats are overall.

Goes both ways.

I have watched games where Bargnani has CLEARLY had like 6-7 blocks and at the end of the night, BAM, he's creditewd with 2.

The NBA is fixed.... always has been. ahem...Michael Jordan....ahem.

I think the point is that statistics are subjective and not as black and white as people would like to make them out to be.
You just can't lend so much credence to numbers because they can be manipulated to represent whatever people want them to.

An admittedly crude metaphor, no doubt.
I'd like nothing more than to have no basis for using it.
