He was already 20 at the start of his freshmen year of college. It helped his recruiting out of high school. He was a man playing against boys, and he continued to have an advanced body through college. Although, to his credit, he then stayed in college longer than he had too. His stock was high enough to go in the first round of the draft after his Junior year at UNC. At that point, he would have been a 23 year old rookie in the NBA. But he chose to finish the degree. Still, I think being older throughout his basketball development provided better options that might not have been available otherwise.

Did KG do it?

Born 1976 and drafted 1995 straight out of high school...

and LeBron

Born 1984 and drafted 2003......

I thought your either 17 or 18 the year you graduate from high school. Unless it's different in the states.

I remember hearing about 5 years of high school. I think that was 20 years ago
you can only play 4 years of high school ball in the US

people have been starting 1st grade a year earlier in recent times. thats why people graduate at 17/18.

makes sense, gives you one extra year to get a full ride at a great college get a first class education if basketball doesn't work out,

if you start getting attention and start becoming a top player in America than re-classify isn't a problem, some summer school and your caught up and go to college as an 18 year old

Re: regular high school graduation age

In some states, if not all, the cut-off for when you're expected to start kindergarten is different than it is in Canada. Here, we use December 31st. So if you turn 5 before December 31st of the school year, you're supposed to enter kindergarten. That's the regular pattern. But in the states (I think most of them) the cut-off is either the start of the school year, or September 1st.

It makes an obvious difference for people born between September and December. In the states they start school a year later than they would in Canada. So, you get guys who are turning 18 early in the year during their senior year. Then if they get held back a year, they turn 19 really early as high school seniors.

Each state is different from July to December. September is the most popular though.
I remember doing junior and senior kindergarden in Canada. don't have that in the US.
