Spurs sign McDyess

As if S.A. were just resting on their laurels after getting RJ:

Free-agent buzz: McDyess eyes Spurs

By Adrian Wojnarowski

The San Antonio Spurs have emerged as the leader in the courtship of free-agent forward Antonio McDyess, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

San Antonio is one of three teams offering the full mid-level exception over two years, sources said. No deal is imminent, but its believed McDyess has offers from the Orlando Magic and possibly the Cleveland Cavaliers.

McDyess is considered one of the best unrestricted free agents on the market, and could complete a terrific offseason makeover for the Spurs as they retool for another championship run.

Hes definitely been wrestling with this [decision], one league executive said.

Detroit president Joe Dumars still wants to re-sign McDyess, but needs to clear more space to make a competitive offer.

McDyess, 34, averaged 9.6 points and 9.8 rebounds for the Pistons last season.

Filling out their starting 5 with McDyess would probably make them the favorites next year because of their qualiity depth as long as they do stay healthy.

There won't be any parity between the top and bottom teams in either conference.

As much as I like McDyess, I'm not sure if he will be able to fill in the Center role for FA. If McDyess comes then SA will have 4 PF's Timmy, Gooden, Blair, Dyess. However, Gooden and Finley are FA's so they could leave and SA can still sign a Center.

Starters
1 Parker
2 Ginobili
3 Jefferson
4 Duncan
5 McDyess

Bench
1 Hill
2 Mason
2/3 Bowen
3 Finley
4 Haislip
4 Blair
4 Gooden
5 Bonner
4/5 Mahinmi

IR
1/2 McClinton
2/3 Hairston
4 Gist

McDyess played center a lot and when he did he avgd over 10 boards a game. The transition will be easy because the PF/C positions are really interchangeable as long as you have length on your frontline. Blair and Bonner off the bench with either Duncan or Mcdyess always in the game is a nice pair that you can mix and match with depending on which team youre playing. Hill Mason and Finley likely back as well? Thats 10 deep.

Spurs make push for McDyess

By Jeff McDonald - Express-News

The Spurs are apparently going hard to the hoop in their pursuit of free-agent forward Antonio McDyess.

According to an NBA source with knowledge of the negotiations, the Spurs are believed to have offered McDyess a three-year contract starting at the full mid-level exception, expected to be worth $5.854 million next season.

That third year, which is only partially guaranteed, could be what puts the Spurs over the top.

It has been widely speculated that McDyess, 34, only plans to play two more seasons. If the Spurs' rumored bid is true, they have essentially sweetened their best two-year offer by guaranteeing McDyess extra cash in 2011-12.

In a matter of hours, the Spurs appear to have moved on from their failed pursuit of Rasheed Wallace.

After Wallace agreed to terms with Boston on Sunday, the 6-foot-9 McDyess surfaced as the Spurs' new Plan A. Thanks to an aggressive supposed bid, they have emerged as the front-runner to land him.

Cleveland and Orlando are considered the Spurs' top competition, while the Pistons have hopes of convincing McDyess to return for a sixth season in Detroit.

Since a pre-draft trade sent big men Fabricio Oberto and Kurt Thomas to Milwaukee in a package for swingman Richard Jefferson, the Spurs' top offseason priority has been to fortify their frontcourt.

McDyess, who averaged 9.6 points and 9.8 rebounds last season, would seem to fulfill that need. Should he accept the Spurs' offer, it would put an end their pursuit of other significant free agents including their own unrestricted free agent, Drew Gooden.

A rugged rebounder and physical interior defender on the cusp of his 15th season, McDyess has been on the Spurs' target list for quite some time. The team cast overtures his direction as far back as November, when McDyess became a free agent following his inclusion in the Chauncey Billups-Allen Iverson deal.

McDyess eventually re-signed with the Pistons then, citing a loyalty to the organization and his desire to play for a championship-level team. Since then, however, the landscape has changed dramatically in Detroit.

The Pistons finished eighth in the Eastern Conference and were swept from the playoffs in the first round by the Cavaliers.

Then there is the matter of money. After committing most of their available cash to free agents Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva this summer, the Pistons will only have between $3 million-$5 million to offer McDyess substantially less than other suitors.

The Spurs appear to have announced their courtship of McDyess in a big way. The ball is in his court now.

Spurs just got deadlier as they are engaged in an arms race...

McDyess leaves Pistons for Spurs

SAN ANTONIO -- Antonio McDyess is leaving the Detroit Pistons for the San Antonio Spurs.

The sought-after free agent reached a deal with the Spurs and is expected to sign later this week, team spokesman Cliff Puchalski said Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the Spurs had their full midlevel exception, worth about $5.6 million this season, to offer McDyess.

The 34-year-old forward averaged 9.6 points and 9.8 rebounds in his 14th NBA season last year.

It is the second big offseason pickup for the Spurs, who acquired swingman Richard Jefferson from Milwaukee last month in a four-player deal.

Killer move by the Spurs, for the title be looking towards LA, SA, Cleveland, Boston, Orlando.

With the Raptors becoming a better team through the trades BC is making, and these 5 title contending teams this year is looking like it will be very entertaining

I hated those NBA finals, they were so short and predictable. Just like the Lakers-Magic series past, hopefully if its a rematch is a nice 7 game series with a buzzer beater half court shot that wins it.

I highly doubt Oberto will return because SA will be over the roster limit if he does.
