Spurs patience with Jefferson running thin

Interesting piece from Yahoo! Could RJ be a missing piece for the Raptors?

Quote:
No one has befuddled Popovich like Jefferson. The Spurs are dumbfounded about how to reach him, how to use him, how to get him to play fluid, mistake-free basketball. Jefferson missed nine of his 11 shots against the Lakers, wide-open jumpers that didn’t fall. He makes $14.2 million this season and $15 million next season. Only Tim Duncan(notes) makes more among these Spurs. Jefferson is the reason that owner Peter Holt was willing to push the payroll past $80 million and well into the luxury tax.

Jefferson isn’t turning into a final piece to chase the Lakers but a crippling, contractual albatross.

One mistake compounds the next, and Jefferson looks burdened, lost and alone. Scouts say “his confidence looks shot,” and that “he isn’t shooting the ball as much as guiding it.” Jefferson knows his lapses on defense are far more glaring when he can’t score.

“When I’m shooting the ball like this, it makes it hard for everyone to get their job done,” he said. “I’m not putting all the blame on me, but you have to look at yourself first.”

As much as anything, the Spurs have lost the identity that won them four championships in nine seasons, that toughness and tenacity which made them a nightmare to play. The Spurs don’t grind teams anymore. They’re one game away from the All-Star break and they’re no longer playing for seeding in the Western Conference; they’re trying to make the playoffs

RJ, Ginobili, and rights to Splitter for Sammy D and Iggy. San Antonio can throw in a first rounder if the Sixers still want more.

I saw Pop yelling at him a few games ago during a timeout called right after he didn't run back on defense, Jefferson was like a scared highschool freshman, hiding behind his teammates, avoiding Pop's eyes.

hahahaha...
that would be a HORRIBLE sight!

i dont blame the Spurs though, he's been quite a disappointment this season and hasnt fit in whatsoever. he was supposed to bring young athleticism to that aging team and its not happening.
he's just another player in the rotation, and with the money that he's getting; that just isnt going to cut it.

That too. Kidd did make things easy on him, but it's not like he's playing with a slouch in Tony Parker.

I hear ya. I never liked the guy and everyone knew his contract was totally insane. WHats insane is that 2 other teams took the contract on a trade.

It might just be a case of seeing an early decline in his career.

Jefferson was never the most talented, he made his mark with hard work, toughness, and defense.

Maybe he just isn't that good...he's getting older, his competition is getting younger, getting dirty on defense just isn't giving him the edge that it used to.

I do think part of it is still stemming from last season with the Bucks.

He was required to be the man and that is a role he has never filled in his career, his numbers dropped, his enthusiasm likely went with it and now he is playing for a great coach, with some great players in a team that has been dominate for the last few years suppossedly to be that "final piece" and again that is a role that is new to him.

When he is just considered a payer on a team it allows him to play within the flow.

SA needs him to fill a role, something he just isnt good at.

A change of scenery and roles would probably do him wonders.

i dont think he's on the downside physically just yet, i've seen a few finishes from RJ this season that were real impressive, definitely still has his leg's

Its just too bad that the spurs would want nothing to do with hedo and his contract, RJ would be the ideal SF for a team with pg's out the ass and shooters al around

Jefferson needs to play alongside a pass-first PG who can feed him on a regular basis. Parker is awesome, but he's not your prototypical double digit assist PG who will feed you consistantly.
RJ is now having to work to get his shots and isnt being catered to, which is something he cant seem to wrap his head around.
his game is about being 'included in the offense' and having a PG/team that allows him to get his touches without really having to work a great deal to do so... unfortunately, thats not how SAS rolls... there, you've got to husstle, get yourself involved and work on both ends of the court to be rewarded...
RJ is a sitting duck on that team... and his numbers have absolutley fallen off the table.
