Question Sporting News: Iverson/Knicks could be the perfect match

Quote:
No telling yet why Iverson's debating retirement. (If the rumor's true, that is.) We also don't know if it's because of the as yet unidentified "personal matter" or having to come off the bench, or whatever relationship there might be between those two factors. Get ready for a thrilling day on the internet, and a lot of old wounds being torn open. Mondays are so, so fine, some news guaranteed to get readers going every time.

However, over at Newsday, Alan Hahn's taking advantage of the opportunity to beat an altogether novel drum. Can you say Iverson to the Knicks?

As the Knicks make an art form of losing, a shambles of Mike D'Antoni's once-vaunted offense and a mockery of the defensive principles that this franchise was built upon, is it time to look at the remaining 75 games and wonder if you have the stomach to endure or do you buckle at the knees and look toward Memphis for help? Yes, Memphis, where a certain fading megastar guard on a very affordable one-year deal has just been given an indefinite leave of absence from the team for "personal reasons."

Iverson still has some go-to caliber game and star cachet among fans. He could also generate some of that long-lost buzz at the Garden and keep the customers intrigued as they patiently await the LeBronathon ... It could be an ideal situation for both parties. Iverson wants to go to a team that will allow him to dominate the ball, score and, of course, start. D'Antoni's system will put Iverson in several pick-and-roll situations with plenty of shooters to kick to on the perimeter.

Sorry, I chopped out some of the "it's like Marbury" language (um, no), as well as the playoff aspirations (seriously, the best the Knicks can hope for now is some semblance of relevance).

Manu Ginobli comes off the bench vs. the Raptors and scores 36 points, and has a massive impact.

Iverson's amazing, but he's got some serious issues.

It could possibly work out. If he's under Dan Tony it might be the only place it would work out. But he'll be moving in on Nate's turf so...

a nate-iverson backcourt would rip the raps to shreds with penetration... that is if they could keep it from becoming a nate vs iverson backcourt.

In spite of everything I still feel bad for A.I..... I have a lot of respect for him as a player and a competitor... and I think that he could still be very effective in the right system.

I thought that CHA would have been a nice fit for him with Larry Brown there but maybe the Knicks would be too with D'Antoni's free-wheeling style.

I hope that he goes SOMEWHERE where we can see him play... because it shouldn't end like this for him.

One problem I see, is the guy just isn't playing much basketball since Detroit. Are his skills atrophying? Probably, I can't imagine all this time away from playing is leaving him very sharp. The more issues he has keeping him off the court, the worse he's gonna get. And plus he keep generating bad press and attention, which harms him mentally, as well. I just see a vicious circle, mostly his own creation.
