76ers Sixers Set To Meet With Josh Smith

Quote:
Philadelphia will meet with restricted free agent Josh Smith today in an effort to lure him to the Sixers, Phil Jasner of the Philadelphia Daily News is reporting.

Atlanta has the option to match any offer sheet which Smith may sign, and have said they'll match any offers that Smith or Josh Childress may get from rival teams.

If the Sixers were to use the entire $11.5 million toward a contract for Smith, using the maximum permissible annual raises of 8 percent from the base year, they could offer a 5-year deal worth $66.7 million, according to Jasner.

According to the report, it is rumored that the Sixers may be trying to get further under the cap to increase an offer to whoever the final target turns out to be.

Big news for the 76ers. If he lands there the Altantic won't take a step back just because the Nets are tanking it for a shot at LeBron James.

I doubt that Atlanta won't match. But if Phily can land him they're even tougher to play next season. Dalembert,Iggy,J.Smith.......

It depends. If Philly goes over the top and offers the guy $12-15M its going to be tough to match with the Hawks already close to the cap and having a need to also take care of Josh Childress.

I pray that J Smoove either signs back with Atlanta or goes somewhere in the Western Conference.

The last thing we need is the Atlantic getting stronger.

They can also frontload to contract to further bully out the Hawks. Philly is in that spot where they don't want to look like pussies for going into the offseason with the most capspace and not signing anyone, so they might do something dumb like throw too much money at Smoove to save face.

What might happen though is that Atlanta will match the offer, and then ask for Igoudola back if Philly still wants to take Smith. Then Philly still like has 9 mil left in capspace to try for a Deng or Ellis, Hawks get a slightly worse player but it's better than losing Smith outright, and I think Iggy and Horford might compliment each other better than Smith and Horford anyways.

Wasn't there a thread made about 2 months ago about how the Sixers are going to be powerhouse next season with their cap space and all?

I think this is the start right how. Expect a few more big signings for them. They'll be tough this year.

you really think josh smith is better than iggy? if any of the players were expendable out of the glut of wingers in atlanta, i'd say josh would be the first to go. he's not a max player, or anywhere near it.
