Knicks Simmons on the Bargnani trade

Quote:
Just so you don't think I'm piling on the Knicks — I actually liked their Andrea Bargnani trade! These last two years, he was trapped in the Amtrak bathroom of NBA situations: It was the perfect storm of "high expectations" + "lavish contract" + "limited player who could thrive in the right situation but suck in the wrong one" + "front office with no game plan" + "perenially lousy team" + "frustrated fan base" + "lots of booing" + "giant bull's-eye on the back" + "shooting slump" + "injuries" … and by the time it was over, people were congratulating new Raptors honcho Masai Ujiri for getting a protected first-rounder and two harmlessly bad contracts for the Italian Byron Mullens.

Mullens, 2012-13: 10.6 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 38.5% FG, 31.7% 3FG, 3.9 3FGA, 12.35 PER, $2.25 million.
Bargnani, 2012-13: 12.7 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 39.9% FG, 30.9 3FG, 3.5 3FGA, 11.2 PER, $10 million.

Screw it, I'm buying Bargnani stock! Stick him on the right team as a stretch 5, get his confidence going and he'll be much closer to 2009 Bargnani (15.4 PPG, 40.9% 3FG) than 2013's abomination.16 Would you ever in a million years play Bargnani and Amar'e Stoudemire together, or Bargnani at the 5 and Carmelo at the 4? No!!!! PLEASE NO!!!!! But you can play Tyson Chandler, Carmelo and Andrea Bargnani together. I think they'll be weirdly effective. (Thinking.) Crap, people are gonna throw this paragraph back in my face in five months. Dammit. Let's just move on.

I've never seen someone who is a fan of the Knicks and the Celtics equally. Simmons is a special person, he can go where no man has gone before.

I don't think he's a Knicks fan, he generally writes somewhat objectively in the context of the team he is talking about.

yeah, I remember a couple of years ago after the 8th seed Pacers lost to the Bulls in game 1 of the first round of the playoffs, Simmons said something about the Pacers being a team on the rise that the rest of the league will have to respect soon.

That was hillarious!

The chances of Bargs being successful in NY are very slim IMO
Given how he was force fed in TO

He will have much less chances to put up shots in NY

He might be able to settle into a second scorer position, but I really don't see it working out.

bargnani will be benched and disappear in Europe by the end of his current contract

lets face it he can't defend well enough to be justified playing time,

simmons is buying the allure that is andrea Bargnani talent, ask the raptor fans how that worked out

I agree, if they are going to use Bargs as a spot up stretch 4, I don't see much success. But I think he will get more freedom to improvise. (even with Melo)

He had freedom with & without Bosh & look how well he did with that?

I think he'll do fine as he really doesn't have pressure on the team as a 1st, 2nd or even 3rd scoring option consistently. Melo/Felton will be 1 and 2 and whoever is hot will be 3rd. If on the second unit it will be Amare/JR as 1 and 2 and whoever is hot will be 3rd. Really, Bargs only needs to maintain his positioning, shoot an occasional 3pt or drive - all done without the pressure of 'have to'. The only pressure will come from the NY media for him to perform and we all know how Bargs handles that - he doesn't give 2 cents - so that isn't a pressure either.

NY has their superstar and all-stars, Bargs is a filler there and when you look at it that way you can see him succeeding there than here in TO.

And to be fair, Bosh couldn't hold the post for Bargs due to his lack of size and weight plus his game is facing the post so he had to play out - not an ideal pairing. And Bargs wasn't strong enough mentally to carry the team as a 1 or even a 2 but then, he's not paid to be a #1 max player, or even a high rolling #2. AB is paid higher cause he's 7' and CAN hit the 3 ball and he CAN drive AND he can play iso D - right up NY's alley.

With the pressure off he should be able to rotate quicker on D and Chandler is strong enough to cover Bargs. Also, Chandler and Melo and JR and Felton etc will be very vocal with Bargs on the court when playing defense - something he needs imo (which I find ironic).
