Seattle one step closer to possibly getting another NBA team

A deal has been reached between the Seattle City Council and the Chris Hansen investor group on financial terms that would build a new sports arena near Safeco Field.

City Council members are expected to make an official announcement outlining the terms of the agreement on Tuesday.

A key concession by Hansen could see the group spend more of their own money to finance the project.

Not good for Vancouver but good news for Seattle, heard there is lots of money behind this group and they are also looking for an NHL franchise

It's most likely going to be the Kings. Hansen will make the Maloofs an offer that they can't refuse and the NBA, feeling pressure from letting the Sonics move in the first place, will allow it but will talk up Sacramento as leading candidate for relocation or expansion.

This is almost a blessing in disguise if Sacramento indeed gets a new team. The Maloofs have burnt every bridge imagineable in Sacramento and the fans feel like they're following a lame duck team. A new owner and new team, with the King name and colors restored, would also revive the railyards arena project that the Maloofs killed.

As for the NHL, I see a team going to QC before Seattle.

The NBA is doing so well money-wise that I wouldn't be surprised if they finally expand past thirty teams. In the NHL they should just contract or relocate already; Columbus would become Seattle and Florida would become Quebec.

The Seattle City Council has approved a plan to build a new arena in the city's SODO district.

The vote was 6 to 2 in favor of the project led by Chris Hansen.

The plan calls for $200 million in public investment, but construction will not begin until it passes an environmental review and Hansen purchases an NBA team.

“Council staff, lawyers and councilmembers have worked hard to produce an agreement that protects the city, charts the right site review process and secures appropriate public benefits,” said Council President Sally J. Clark. “Today’s vote closes one phase of tasks and begins another, including work on how we plan for a bright future at Seattle Center.”

I highly doubt that. There are still struggling teams in the NBA.

Ie.

Memphis, New Orleans, Charlotte an heck I wouldn't be surprised if washington and Utah aren't doing too well. NBA attendance isn't exactly stellar either. No chance the NBA expands. Seattle will grab a struggling city and I'll put my money on New Orleans

seattle "stealing" a draft superstar like they had stolen from them would be so ironic!

i think the katrina effect will last and it won't be NOH who lose their franchise.

The Monday Night Football refs were clearly Sonics fans.

I've been looking at the Sacramento RealGM forums to see if there's any James Johnson news. Sacramento sure sounds like it is in a financial shit storm. One of the owners owes $170 million to the city and the NBA, and some major sponsors have pulled out this year (LINK1) (LINK2)
