Sacramento to Anaheim?

Great, that's all LA needs. A third team.

With so much talk about the fate of the New Orleans Hornets, it's easy to forget there's another NBA team that wants out of its current arena.

The owners of the Sacramento Kings have been trying for more than a decade to get a replacement for Arco Arena. Voters rejected a sales tax in 2006 that would have paid for the new digs. And the Cal Expo board last year rejected a land swap to provide land for a downtown arena.

Columnist Randy Youngman of the Orange County Register speculates that the Maloof family now might have its sights on Anaheim.

Youngman says Anaheim Ducks owner Henry Samueli wants an NBA team to share the Honda Center. Seattle, San Jose, Kansas City, Las Vegas and Louisville also have been mentioned in the past as potential new homes for the Kings.

The latest speculation was triggered by a Bloomberg News story that two private investment firms are working to take control of the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas after the Maloofs violated loan covenants.

The family released a statement Monday, saying, "We are looking at all options to ensure the long-term viability of this franchise."

Seattle has a waiting billionaire in Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, but KeyArena is not considered "NBA-quality" anymore. San Jose has Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and HP Pavilion, home of the Sharks, but the league has already rebuffed Ellison's attempts to buy the Hornets.

Does Anaheim have the inside track for the Kings?

"We have always wanted, and continue to work on getting an NBA basketball team at the arena," Michael Schulman, Ducks CEO and chairman of Anaheim Arena Management, said Sunday. "And we will continue to work at that. If the Kings end up deciding to leave Sacramento, we would welcome them to Anaheim. Or any other team."

No more musical chairs.

For the betterment of the game, if teams can't cut it in their current market, they should just be contracted.

Personally I'd love to see Seattle get a team and Vancouver as well. Get those two markets a team and get rid of Memphs, New Orleans, Charlotte and the Clippers.

IMO you can't just get rid of a team that's one of the oldest in professional basketall and a team that's been in the NBA since the 40's

i don't see a difference between moving them and contracting them. In both cases the Sacremento Kings cease to exist.

I am not in favour of the Kings moving or going away. I'd rather they stay where they are.

I also think 30 teams is about 4 too many in my ideal world.

I agree, imo 25-26 teams would be ideal.

I say move them back to Rochester and make them the Royals again!

no. they would no longer be the Sacramento Kings would they? Maybe i'm alone.

Do people in Vancouver have a soft spot for the memphis grizzlies? I don't think the people of Vancouver consider the Grizzlies 'their team' anymore.

-Less teams in the league vs exactly the same amount of teams.
-Moving them, players move with them. While Contracting them, some would be out of the league, the others i suppose would have to chosen by the remaining teams in a draft.

come on man, i know the actual difference between the two.

I am just saying from a fan's point of view, to me there's no difference between contracting the team and moving them to another city as far as the Sacramento Kings are concerned. In both cases the team that has that rich history in a town, that has been so important to so many people that live there, is now gone.

Again maybe i'm alone, but the Anaheim Kings are not the same thing as the Sacramento Kings.

When was the last contracted team in the NBA? I'm trying to remember.

NBA has to cut some weak limbs off to stave a full blown strike. I think you guys are safe, I think my Blazers are on the edge, the Kings are buried in a ditch, and the Pistons, Bobcats, and New Orleans have basically had it.
