Knicks Rumour: Phil Jackson, Knicks finalizing deal to run the front office

Quote:
Phil Jackson and the New York Knicks are expected to finalize a deal that will give the legendary coach control of the club's front office by the end of this week, according to a league source.

"Everything is pretty much done," the source said. "There are just some little things here and there that need to be worked out, but the Knicks are very confident that this is essentially done."

An official announcement might not come until next week, the source said.

There has been speculation that Jackson is using the Knicks to get a top-flight job with another franchise, particularly the Los Angeles Lakers, but the source said the Knicks have no fear of Jackson leaving them at the altar for another team.

Jackson will take over the Knicks' basketball operations department from president and general manager Steve Mills. Mills, however, will remain an integral part of the organization, according to the source.

Good spot for him. By reading the title I thought it was a coaching deal.

What does Jackson know about rebuilding a franchise, does he even have the patience for it??? I would be extremely hesitant to just hand the keys over to Phil but then again it's a complete panic move, mainly to please the crowd...

Rumors are that he might bring in Steve Kerr to coach.

Even Phil can't fix what they've done to that roster.

Going to be interesting to see who Jackson brings in as the new head coach at season's end.

According to a person close to Jackson, Dolan and Bradley have been working together to finalize an agreement that would make Jackson the highest-paid basketball executive in NBA history.
The source claims that reports of Jackson being offered an annual salary of $12 million are erroneous and that Jackson could be looking at a deal that pays him in excess of $15 million. The person close to Jackson also indicated that the two sides have had preliminary discussions about Jackson possibly owning a minority stake in the team.

I think people are quick to jump on his lack of experience but I don't think it sounds all that far-fetched.

He might have one advantage in running the team that no one else had with Dolan, CLOUT. This is all assumptions but I wouldn't be surprised if Dolan has been making his GM's look bad and not the other way around.

Phil would likely be one of the few guys that would tell Dolan to fuck off if he is being an idiot (doesn't need the money, doesn't need the job) and as such will probably keep Dolan from causing problems.

Addition by subtraction even if he is no good?

MAYBE!

I hope he has more of a Michael Jordan way to being a first time GM than a Larry Bird way.

I don't see how anyone can help the Knicks achieve anything in the next two years in any way. No cap, no good picks, few good players, lousy culture and so much pressure. And if Carmelo leaves? Bye bye for the next three years.

The best anyone can achieve with that team is keep Carmelo and remove the likes of Felton, JR Smith and Amare from that team. And then what? Who will they get? It is not like there are a whole bunch of good players that will be available and the Knicks will have the cap space. It is not like they have assets to exchange. They need a year just to clean up that mess. And I think that is the best case scenario.

Question Phil Jackson is back

This is odd, why would he come back and for the knicks , who aren't even in the playoffs, why doesn't he coach the Raptors? we don't have the money ?
This is unfair - watch New York make the playoffs now and win the championship

I predict this to end up being a disaster. Phil Jackson has never been an executive and seems to me he'll be a meddler and control freak. Could be wrong but i hope they come to regret this.

I'm thinking Jackson will serve mostly as a glorified figurehead. He's someone Dolan can present to the media, fans and Melo as a proven winner, but how can he make his mark on a team mired in cap hell with no draft picks? pep talks to the current roster about Sidhartha?
