Source close to situation says "60 percent" chance ATL trades Josh Smith b4 deadline. Brooklyn one of several teams interested.

Apparently Brooklyn just loves taking guys that are overpaid/will be. I would love to have Smith here though, our lineup would be outstanding. Not to mention I'd much rather overpay Smith than Boozer...

The question is, if Atlanta asks for Bargs and one of either Ross or Valanciunas do you do it? and who would you give up?

I'm not so sure anymore...

I would trade Bargs + TRoss in a heartbeat, let's hope Bargnani gets showcased this week before the deadline. The PG, SF, PF, and the Center position will eventually be set once Jonas develops in a couple years. That's a starting lineup that will get us deep in the playoffs for years to come. Get some solid veterans here for the bench and who knows how far this team can go.

I like Ross but I would be willing to include him in a trade that nets us a quality player who can help Lowry, DD and Rudy right now. Josh Smith is not the player I'd want, though.

Also, as I said before, I don't think Atlanta would take back Bargnani, because it fucks with their massive cap room next year, which they are supposedly planning to use to remodel the club. If they spend big bucks, it's to be the team that allows CP3 and Howard to hook up.

Bargnani could be sold as a bargain #2/#3 player given the right situation though. And considering the attendance they have in Atlanta, I don't see them picking up anyone big for the near future, it feels like the Hawks will go back to mediocrity in the near future and slowly rebuild again, especially after losing Joe Johnson and now JSmoove.

Maybe. But a rebuild would not be good for attendance, either. In my opinion (and it's just that, since I don't know 100% what Ferry is thinking) "remodeling" is probably a better option.

Link: Nets Pursuing Josh Smith

Quote:
The Brooklyn Nets are aggressively pursuing a trade for Atlanta Hawks star forward Josh Smith, league sources told ESPN.

The two teams are engaged in discussions, but one source said while "there has been lots of talk, nothing is close yet."

As the NBA's Feb. 21 trade deadline nears, Brooklyn is proving to be one of the most active teams in the league. As reported by ESPN.com on Friday, sources said the Nets also are talking with the Charlotte Bobcats about a Kris Humphries-for-Ben Gordon trade.
Quote:
While the Nets certainly want Gordon, sources said acquiring Smith is their higher priority. A trade for Smith would seemingly kill a deal for Gordon, because Humphries is one of the players being discussed with Atlanta. The Nets are willing to give up Humphries and second-year shooting guard MarShon Brooks for Smith. But it almost certainly will take more than a Humphries-Brooks combination to pry Smith away from Atlanta, and one source said the Hawks want Brooklyn's first-round pick.

Some scenarios that have been discussed include the Hawks' Anthony Morrow, who played the past two seasons with the Nets, returning to the club.

ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported Saturday that the Hawks want a young center in return for Smith.

The Nets may have to get a third team involved to pull off a trade for Smith.
Quote:
Smith will become a free agent this summer, and Atlanta is deciding whether to trade him before the deadline. One source close to the situation estimated there is a 60 percent chance the Hawks will move him.

If the Hawks don't trade Smith, they risk losing him for nothing as a free agent. Atlanta could re-sign Smith, but he wants close to maximum-salary money, if not the max.

One school of thought has the Hawks keeping Smith in order to make themselves more attractive to Smith's longtime friend and fellow Atlanta native, Dwight Howard.

Howard, who is struggling through a nightmarish season with the Los Angeles Lakers, will become a free agent this summer, and Atlanta will join Dallas and Houston in offering him a max-salary contract. Sources have said Howard has little interest in playing in Atlanta.

The good news if the nets/hawks are talking Hump/Marshon, then Bargs should be enough and it should not have to include ross if we can get in there.

The Spurs are interested? Hmmm...assuming it's true, I wonder if San Antonio is just looking to rent him, or if they really see him as part of their longer term plans? I have difficulty seeing that organization give him a max contract.

The Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks continue to hold serious talks on a deal centered around Josh Smith.

Monta Ellis and Ekpe Udoh are amongst the players discussed that would go the Hawks for Smith and Devin Harris.

Smith is eligible for free agency this offseason.

Sources tell ESPN's Chris Broussard that Ellis would not be included in a deal for Smith.
