Royce White missing training camp over anxiety/fear of flying

Quote:

Royce White has been absent from the Houston Rockets' media day and training camp in what the team is describing as "a personal matter."

White has a history of anxiety issues.

“We are committed to Royce’s long-term success, and we will continue to support him now and going forward,” said Daryl Morey.

This was from a Rockets board:

Quote:

'Royce White didn't attend Rockets media day on Monday, or practice on Tuesday, as he deals with ongoing anxiety issues.
White isn't sure when he'll be able to join his new team. "It's not really anything that's going on right now," said White. "It is definitely linked with my anxiety ... Basically what happened was my doctor, we discussed it, and it was decided the way the plan was now just wasn't logistically healthy." His anxiety is exacerbated by a fear of flying, which could be a serious hurdle as the Rockets criss-cross the country to play 41 away games. Oct. 2 - 3:13 pm et"

Googled his pics, he should really hide his lion tattoo under a sleeve then. Don't smoke weed all summer won't get anxious duuuh.

it does. i don't know what numbah eleven is talking about. lol.

so if this dude cannot fly...what is he doing in the nba? maybe he have should have conquered his fear/anxiety of flying before entering the draft...

I'm not an expert on drugs, so you're right, it might as well be crystal meth.

Anyhow I bet his team mates are happy - less competition.

creative1mm 10-03-2012 04:21 PM

well I read that it wasn't the actual flying he is afraid of, but the moments leading up to the flying.. so I guess being at the airport, boarding the plane those kind of things..

I guess it's like when your getting ready to make a speech, while your talking your good, but just preparing and thinking about it is what brings all that fear and anxiety..

hope he can overcome this..
I wonder if they can just bring him on a private plane alone.. with people close to him.. how else can you overcome it when your not exactly fighting your fears.. I dunno

Anxiety/fear doesn't sound like the case here, sounds like a true phobia. If that's the case then this isn't something that can 'just be conquered' - it's a legitimate disorder that can be crippling and is life long. Those that want to have a life eventually learn to cope and manage it. White will eventually find ways to manage his phobia so he can fly regularly - not like he and the Rockets didn't know what they were getting into in the first place.

If this is an anxiety disorder, then let him get a doctors note for some kush

Chiggmo 10-03-2012 07:09 PM

I found a pretty cool video of him and cameras following him around, ill see if i can get it back to post it.

And its not a phobia, he has major anxiety issues...

INSIDER 10-03-2012 07:46 PM

they're going to have to do a B.A Barrakus on him and knock him out before every flight.

box92 10-03-2012 07:48 PM

it sucks that it could affect his game, he is a top 10 talent in this draft, his passing is insane

Toby 10-03-2012 09:27 PM

fear of heights is some serious shit. Makes you dizzy and stuff. He should do some rock climbing, it helped me a lot.

Fair enough, still a disorder and serious however medication and relaxation techniques will work fine as he seems committed. As a Doc, I prescribe Bubba Kush, then he'll sleep on the flight as well. :cookie:

I have an extreme fear of falling.

On a serious note, I have a pilots license and like myself, a large percentage of the pilots I've met are afraid of heights.

Same.
It's not the height it's the movement of railing that you're holding onto, or anything that just doesn't feel right about the situation freaks me out.
Shrug.

I'm seriously rooting for the guy, and hope he can get past this.

I saw a few things with him before the draft, and it seems like he was really working on his character. I hope that he can overcome this and somehow show others (because my guess is that there are millions and millions of people suffering) that he can beat this and be successful despite his affliction.

Thanks for posting this!

I responded before I watched the video, and now I'm cheering for the guy even more.

If you haven't yet, please take a few minutes to watch this video. I coached a girl who had anxiety disorder, as well as bipolar disorder too, and it's very REAL. This video gives you a little glimpse in to what it's like living with these kinds of disorders.

Royce White is requesting permission to travel to some games by private bus, the Houston Rockets' first round pick told ESPN on Wednesday.

White has an anxiety disorder that is increased by his fear of flying.

White said he is willing to purchase the bus and assume liability.

White missed the team's media day on Monday and the start of training camp in McAllen, Texas, on Tuesday, said he hopes to reach an agreement with the team soon.

"What it's going to look like is every game that's drivable, I'm going to get a bus for myself," White said. "And I'm going to make that bus feel like home so that there's a level of consistency in a job where inconsistency is very apparent because of the schedule. I'm going to try and level that out and make sure that my stress levels stay low and that my rest is regular and that my meals are regular and that as much as I can, draw consistency from a very inconsistent schedule. ...

"People with mental illness, one of the most important things is that they have that consistency and routine. The girth of (my request) was, 'Can I travel by bus to close enough games?' "
