Rockets The Royce White Dilemma

SLAM ONLINE | The Difficult Royce White Situation in Houston

Quote:
Rookie forward Royce White has missed numerous team practices of late, and the Houston Rockets have elected to send him down to their Development League affiliate squad.

The absences are unexcused, and given White’s difficult transition into the NBA due to his anxiety disorder, there are no easy answers here.

The Houston Chronicle reports:
Rockets acting coach Kelvin Sampson said he did not know why White did not attend Tuesday’s practice and did not speak with him Monday, when Motiejunas and Machado were told of the plans to send them to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. But Rockets owner Leslie Alexander said there have been “internal repercussions, which I’m not going to talk about.” More foreboding, Alexander’s confidence in White’s long-term prospects seem shaken since he expressed enthusiasm for White’s potential during the summer league in Las Vegas. “That’s tenuous,” Alexander said. “It’s tough to talk about something like that. I think we’re going to handle it internally. If he doesn’t work out, well, it’s tough to lose a draft choice.”

In a statement Tuesday, White seemed to blame the Rockets for failing to live up to agreements to help him manage his battle with anxiety. [...] “In hindsight,” the statement said, “perhaps it was not a good idea to be open and honest about my anxiety disorder — due to the current situations at hand that involve the nature of actions from the Houston Rockets. As a rookie, I want to settle into a team and make progress; but since pre-season the Rockets have been inconsistent with their agreement to proactively create a healthy and successful relationship. At this point, the Rockets are aware of my position and the reason for my absence, any other response is inaccurate. This is important to me, it is a health issue. I must advocate for my rights, it is a player-commodity league — the failure to meet my requests for support will end with me being unhealthy and that is not a consequence that I am willing to accept to play any sport.”

White — who had more to say about this incident on his Twitter page — didn’t miss practices or games at Iowa State due to his anxiety, but he missed a week of training camp for the Rockets, and this latest absence will not help matters any.

The Houston Rockets, though understandably frustrated, say they will continue to support Royce White.
Personally, I've been intrigued about how Royce White will develop and how this all pans out in a year. I for one work with a high school student with anxiety disorder (I'm a volunteer support worker supervising high school students at part time workplaces) and watching her gain a little courage everyday when socializing is a great feeling. However for Royce here, he's placed on a huge stage, so the stakes are higher, also considering that this is a business and that the people he might grow to be comfortable with might be gone the next day. This might be a big small event in the NBA that might open the floodgates for integration in the near future, I don't know, but this is interesting to say the least.

So they send White and D-Mo to Dleague. Imo these are two very talented rookies. Could we steal them from Rokets? trade them for Fields Lin would be so happy

Fields for both... do it. Heck, send 3M too. Ask them if they need the rights to Sonny Weems too.

I feel bad for this kid. He wants to try, but it's not easy. Its hard enough when you are a nobody, just day to day.... what he is in now could be potentially a completely destructive situation for him. I really hope he gets through it. I'm in his corner.

I know that people can work through it, but it can be really difficult. You wonder how much time the franchise will spend on keeping him happy.

fact is, he cannot play on an NBA team if he can't fly. Its sad.

Coming from someone working in the mental health field, it is clear that one's upbringing and life experiences play a huge role in how he will be able to engage in recovery from anxiety. Given that he never missed practices in college, it is evident that having the responsibility of being an NBA player has worsened his symptoms, and he needs to find some new ways to tolerate these stressors, find effective medicine and treatment. Having worked with various people with anxiety disorders, people often persevere, and recover. It is a matter of having a good support network and effective treatment. That being said, every situation is different and I wish this guy best of luck in this process. Hopefully, he can overcome both the physical and emotional symptoms that come from experiencing anxiety. I can't imagine trying to be a professional athlete and suffering panic attacks prior to games and practice.

This guy's twitter the last few days has just been unreal. He can't stop

Royce looks like he has greater mental problems than anxiety to me. This guy is legit unstable. Rockets need to cut his contract as soon as possible

problem is you can't just throw professionals at him and expect results right away. This became way too messy, therefore royce's outbursts on twitter just because that's the only place where he can voice his opinions, he can't go and talk to the media.

This story is a little foggy right now, but we'll see whose fault it is later on.

The worst thing possible for him would be if Morey dealt him to the Kings.

He has other anxiety problems as well other then just that, pulled from wiki:

Quote:
White traces personal battles with anxiety to a basketball practice when he was 10 years old. One day during wind sprints, he witnessed his best friend collapse and begin drooling from the mouth. He rode in the ambulance as paramedics rushed his friend to the hospital to save him from a cardiac abnormality. White fears conditioning runs to this day. He was diagnosed with general anxiety disorder in 2008. White continues to wake up 3 or 4 times a night.
