Roy disappears for national anthem

Quote:
It is not a political statement. It is not a protest. He said it is not intended as a slap on patriotism, or the ongoing war but Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy has long been absent from the Rose Garden Arena floor during the national anthem.

For two seasons now, Roy leaves the court before "The Star Spangled Banner" is performed. He waits out of sight, in the arena tunnel, and has a quiet moment of prayer while his teammates stand and honor America together.

Something about that feels troubling.

Roy is the Blazers captain, and leader, and two-time All Star. And while I understand his desire to have a personal moment to gather his thoughts, I think there is ample time for a meditative moment in the hours leading to the game and I worry that the statement he's making is one of individualism.

What would the fallout be if Roy's teammates decided to join their leader in the tunnel? What if Roy weren't from Seattle, but rather, from Spain, like Rudy Fernandez? What of respect, and heritage, and ceremony? What of team unity and leadership when the ball isn't in your hands?

we should do away with the anthems at the beginning of sporting events anyways. it's just silly flag-waving that has nothing to do with the game or many of the players.

agreed. It has a place before an international game (involving national teams), but it's not nesessary in the NBA or other leagues.

Roy is one those few stars that actually look like they have something in their head. I have no problem with this. National Anthems should not be used in domestic leagues.

i dont know why the anthem is there, but if it is removed thats exactly what will happen. there would be alot of pressure from politicians and people.

Nationalism can be repulsive...No one should be bound to a nation, let alone an anthem. Roy's actually listening to varying Seattle sound machine bands in the tunnel to drown out the anthem. Deride him for listening to bands from Seattle, even though he's from there.

I also agree there is no need for it before basketball games. Who cares? It's just a nuisance.

National anthems give the players a few minutes of silent, alone time to think right before a big game. Singing anthems isn't a tradation that should be broken anytime soon, it's nice.
