Default Rosen: First quarter coaching grades

Hmmm ... what do you guys think? Is a C grade for Sam fair at this point?

Mike Woodson (Atlanta): The young Hawklings are rapidly coming of age, and Woodson's mature leadership is a significant factor. GRADE: A

Doc Rivers (Boston): Credit Rivers for instilling an unselfish attitude among his mega-stars. GRADE: A+

Sam Vincent (Charlotte): The Bobcats are playing about as well (and as poorly) as expected. GRADE: C

Scott Skiles (Chicago): The thrill is gone. GRADE: F

Mike Brown (Cleveland): He's getting the most out of Danny Ferry's dysfunctional roster. GRADE: C

Avery Johnson (Dallas): His biggest task is to somehow heal his team's bruised psyche. GRADE: C

George Karl (Denver): He's doing an admirable job of keeping his relatively selfish players on the same page. GRADE: B+

Flip Saunders (Detroit): It's business as usual during the 82-game pre-season. He's letting his vets play and hoping Rasheed doesn't totally self-destruct. The Flipster is also bowing to popular demand and using his bench more than ever. GRADE: B+

Don Nelson (Golden State): The Warriors are just about where they're supposed to be. GRADE: C+

Rick Adelman (Houston): After straining against Jeff Van Gundy's short leash for so long, the Rockets have yet to buy into Adelman's motion offense. GRADE: C-

Jim O'Brien (Indiana): A new sense of freedom (and honesty) has inculcated a sense of togetherness. GRADE: B

Mike Dunleavy (LAC): With Elton Brand down for the count, the Clippers have every excuse to struggle. GRADE: C-

Phil Jackson (LAL): The youngsters are finally starting to figure out what's what, and Derek Fisher has helped Kobe relate to his teammates. Meanwhile, PJ flashes his inscrutable smile and plays tricks on us all. GRADE: B-

Marc Iavaroni (Memphis): Trying to get a team of quarterhorses to run like thoroughbreds was (and is) a mistake. GRADE: D

Pat Riley (Miami): No juice on the court or on the bench just a lot of complaining in loud voices. GRADE: F+

Larry Krystkowiak (Milwaukee): Still learning how to juggle players and egos. GRADE: C+

Randy Wittman (Minnesota): He's the fall guy and the bottom line is that the season is littered with banana peels. GRADE: C-

Lawrence Frank (New Jersey): An underrated coach trying to motivate an overrated team. GRADE: C-

Byron Scott (New Orleans): Getting the most out of Chris Paul and a cast of what are basically supporting players. GRADE: A

Isiah Thomas (New York): Reaping what he's sowed, lucky he's still employed, and laughing all the way to the bank. GRADE: F-

Stan Van Gundy (Orlando): The rest of the league is starting to catch up with the Magic's tricks, but as Dwight Howard gets better, SVG becomes a better coach. GRADE: A-

Maurice Cheeks (Philadelphia): No surprises in Cheese-steak City. GRADE: C

Mike D'Antoni (Phoenix): Still running, still gunning, still hoping that Steve Nash's wheels don't fall off. GRADE: A-

Nate McMillan (Portland): With Greg Oden lost, this was supposed to be a throwaway season. GRADE: A

Reggie Theus (Sacramento): His imperious style of coaching (and of relating to the rest of the world) has not endeared him to his players. Having Bibby and Martin injured doesn't help either. GRADE: C-

Gregg Popovich (San Antonio): The defending champs show no signs of letting up. GRADE: A+

P.J. Carlesimo (Seattle): Force-feeding Durant and baby-sitting just about everybody else. GRADE: C-

Sam Mitchell (Toronto): The pumpkin frosts early in Toronto. GRADE: C
Jerry Sloan (Utah): A too-short bench and too many unhappy campers. GRADE: C-

Eddie Jordan (Washington): Keeping the Wizards afloat with Arenas gone is a major accomplishment. GRADE: A

i dont get that at all?
what the hell does he mean?

i disagree with sloan getting such a low grade.
if they werent winless in their last 5, he'd have gotten an A.
they've just been unlucky vs good teams over that span.

i'm actually very surprised with byron scott, he's doing a great job over in NO.
he deserves an A+, as does stan van gundy.

Getting a C from Rosen is something like getting a B from anyone else. The comment is nonsense, and I just don't think he cares about Toronto. It's pretty obvious that he is pulling stuff out of his ass for the most part. Does Doc really need to instill anything, especially unselfishness in three players that have never shown themselves to be selfish? With Boston the best thing they did was nab Thibideau as an assistant. It's their defense that is making the difference, not unselfishness.
