Rondo a needle in the haystack that was the 2006 draft

Quote:
On this side of the border, we all know what happened at the top of the 2006 NBA Draft. The Toronto Raptors selected Andrea Bargnani with the first overall pick. Four years of discussion, head shaking and hand wringing have followed.

Twenty picks later, the Boston Celtics selected (with a pick Phoenix essentially sold them) point guard Rajon Rondo from Kentucky. Rondo, a sophomore, was pegged as a shifty guard with no discernable jumpshot. Four years later, he has become the best player from that draft, despite only a mild improvement on that jumper. (At the very worst, he is the second-best player in that draft, debatably behind only Portland’s Brandon Roy, who comes with some injury concerns.)

On Sunday, Rondo posted 29 points, 18 rebounds and 13 assists in Boston’s Game 4 win over Cleveland to tie that second-round series 2-2. Only two other players in NBA history have posted those numbers or better in the same playoff game — Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson.

The uptake: The wrong pick was made in that draft at least 19, and maybe 20 times. What became of those 20 players drafted before Rondo? Here is a breakdown, with their draft slot in parentheses:

All-stars (1): Brandon Roy, Portland (6)*

Core players (3): Andrea Bargnani, Toronto (1)*; LaMarcus Aldridge, Portland (2)*; Rudy Gay, Memphis (8)*

Rotation players (6): Tyrus Thomas, Charlotte (4); Randy Foye, Washington (7); J.J. Redick, Orlando (11)*; Thabo Sefolosha, Oklahoma City (13); Ronnie Brewer, Memphis (14); Rodney Carney, Philadelphia (16)

Rarely used reserves (6): Adam Morrison, L.A. Lakers (3); Shelden Williams, Boston (5); Patrick O’Bryant, Toronto (9); Hilton Armstrong, Sacramento (12); Oleksiy Pecherov, Minnesota (18); Renaldo Balkman, Denver (20)

Out of the league (4): Saer Sene (10); Cedric Simmons (15); Shawne Williams (17);

Only 4-5 stars players in that draft.

Roy, Bargnani, Gay, Aldridge, Rondo

How many stupid picks wasted on useless bigs.... *shakes head*

I remember being a little ticked off that we didn't grab another pick that year.

Figures Toronto would get the first pick in a weak draft....

Not to reduce what Rondo has done for that team, but playing with 3 all stars who can all command double-teams has got to make things easier for him...

Pretty good draft actually.

I'll still say the Bargnani pick was the right pick that year for this team.

I remember last there was a question poll about wich way is the better way to developpe a rookie
there was the winning team and
the losing
Rondo is a perfect exemple of how you developpe players in a good team

Funny because Rondo first played on a terrible Boston team.....no one knew he would be this good. He was pretty below average his rookie year.

You must remember Rondo wasn't Bostons 1st pick POB was.
Just luck it happens.
Dislike him as a person but he is a good player,

Technically, we could have had Rondo and Bargnani. At one time the Raps held the 20th pick in the 2006 draft. It was acquired from New jersey during the Carter trade. However, Babcock traded it away to New York in order to ditch Jalen Rose and try and create cap space.

Sorry. Maybe I should have kept that to myself?

PHX is the real loser in all this, I remember they traded the pick to save money. Although Rondo would have been Nashs backup and obviously wouldnt be as far along as he is now, having that piece as a trading option or an heir to Nashs thrown would have been very nice

The current Phoenix back-up PG isn't that shabby.
Both he and Rondp had pretty good nights.

Actually, Wayne Embry traded the pick away to New York along with Rose.

Noah I believe was toying with entering the draft. I also believe many had him as a lock to go number 1. What could've been.
