Heat Reward System pushing Heat

Quote:
After adding LeBron James(notes) and Chris Bosh(notes), among plenty of others, and re-signing Dwyane Wade(notes) this past summer, the high-powered Miami Heat had a tough start to the season, struggling to a 9-8 record. But things have changed. The team has won its last eight games pretty handily.

So what happened? The Miami Herald reports that a little reward system has helped change the tide (since the mega-millions they are getting paid wasn't doing the trick).

The way coach Erik Spoelstra's system works is that if a Heat player gets a defensive rebound or steal, he gets to decide what will happen offensively. So the more defensive stops you make, the more control you have over what happens at the other end. There haven't been whispers of players not liking Spoelstra since the new plan has gone into effect.

"Our job is to defend and then we get rewarded with what we want to do on offense,'' James said, according to the Herald.

Very strange.... can't argue with it though. Seems to be working and the Heat are playing better D than I ever thought they would TBH.

What if Joel Anthony gets a defensive rebound?

Then he better choose to give the ball to Lebron or Wade or else he won't be on the court to get another one.

I can just picture Joel Anthony's requests being politely ignored in a time out.

What ever happened to keeping your mouth shut and respecting your coach? The stars in this generation(mainly the big 3) are acting like brats at times. It's like Spoeltra hasn't assorted his position as the leader. The coach is your boss, and you listen to his orders.

Spoelstra is treating James, Wade and Bosh like the entitled little brats they are.

I would think if that was the case they would be having much less success. This team is simply playing good basketball.

I think that's awesome. Whatever gets the team motivated, going and wining.

For all of you that laugh at Eric for his coaching, just look at the result. That's all that matters. And then look at Jay and his result. A guy who has never motivated the team in two years. A guy whose players constantly look lethargic on the court.

You guys are simply hating. Heat's an awesome team. I don't like seeing LeBron for even one second but they are playing excellent basketball.

Ummmm.... really? because they've looked pretty motivated in most of the games this season.

Little bit of a difference in talent I think (between the Raps and Heat).

true. Apparently Spoelstra lets the guy with the most points the game before also pick the lockerroom music.

The truth is that Spo is finding some means of developing chemistry and some structure that they can hang their hats on - he's making something of the motivation, while Triano can motivate his guys all he wants (and sorry to say that they don't all look so motivated on any given night), they have no real outlet. They need to play hard just to get any stops and get any baskets. There is no making anything look easy, because it just isn't, unless the other team is happy to play the same game of early offense, little defense, in which case the Raptors still need to figure out how to get their second wind so they can make it through the whole game.

The Heat have the whole team buying into playing defense first. triano talks about little else and has zero results to show for it. Yay.
