Exclamation Refeeree Joe DeRosa suspended without pay

Quote:
NBA referee Joe DeRosa has been suspended without pay for one game for throwing a ball to a fan at halftime of Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals on May 18. The suspension was announced today by Ron Johnson, NBA Senior Vice President, Referee Operations.

DeRosa will miss the next game he would have been scheduled to work. The fan was not ejected from the arena as was reported previously.

They should be suspending refs for questionable calls and incompetency, not silly crap like this.

It's not as if he angrily chucked it at his head or something. Odd that they'd suspend him for that.

not odd at all. no ref should ever engage the fans. ever. i'm surprised he didn't get a lot more than that.

Yeah, and you could tell just by looking at his face their to start the second half that he was a bit rattled and knew he messed up big time letting his composure slip like that.

Agreed...

He knew he fucked up...

Refs engagement with the fans should be the exact same as the players...

Imagine a player did that?... I'm sure it would be more then a 1 game suspension..

If I did something the equivalent of that to a customer of mine I would have been fired. Hes getting 300k a year to be impartial in calling a basketball game. You cant lose composure like that.

I think a better punishment would be to let every head coach kick him in the nuts!

horrible move by derosa...
its his job to stay calm and composed. its not like he's a newbie, he's a veteran official with years of this under his belt. he should be ashamed.
refs fail when they take things personally... it effects their judgment and can effect a game. not cool.

Agree. I thought they would suspend him the rest of the playoffs.

Like most have said refs can not let fans get to them like this. Could of lead to more trouble. Also didn't like that the ref had the fan thrown out. Don't know what he was saying but it can't be any worse then other fans saying stuff to players.

If you expect players to keep their cool with fans it has to be the same with refs.

Why did they even suspend him. They should have just left it as it is. The NBA is just being a bunch of pussies now a days. You can't even bump your own chest without getting t'ed up.

Who cares ..
It won't change the quality of the Refs ... that's what they should focus on.
